Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Jake Collier and Stephen Fischer both tossed complete games while Tyler Alford driving in two runs with a single in the opener and Hector Viera hitting a two-run homer in the second game in Cumberland’s doubleheader sweep of Culver-Stockton, 5-2 and 4-3, on Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-11) hit the road for an eight-game road swing on Monday, taking on MidAmerica Christian at Noon and Oklahoma City University at 3 p.m., with both games at OCU.
Collier tossed six shutout innings in the opener before running into trouble in the ninth, striking out Brandon Cotter, the potential tying run, to end the contest. The righthander retired 14 of 16 batters from the second to the sixth innings, hitting a batter and allowing a leadoff single in the fourth. He did not walk a batter and struck out six to pick up his first win of the season.
Alford’s two-run single in the first gave the Bulldogs an early lead before a bunt single by Eddie McDaniels and a sacrifice fly by Justin Byrd in the fourth put CU ahead, 4-0. The final Cumberland run scored on a balk in the fifth.
Fischer also got his first victory of the year, giving up three unearned runs on six hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven while stranding the tying run at second in the seventh inning.
Each team scored twice in the first inning of the second game, with Viera’s second home run of the season tying the contest. Byrd’s RBI double in the second plated Orlando Collado and Alford scored Viera with a single in the third.
Jake Hillier’s RBI single in the fifth pulled Culver-Stockton (4-12) within a run and Cotter was hit to start the seventh inning, but was stranded at second to end the game.
In the opener Phil Stiles was hit with one out in the first and Viera followed with a single. Ryan Dickison’s groundout moved the runners to second and third, setting up Alford’s two-out, two-run single to right.
In the fourth Richard Carter reached on an error for the Bulldogs and Conor Dishman singled before a sac bunt by Ryan Simmons. McDaniels plated a run with his bunt single and Byrd’s sac fly put CU in front, 4-0.
Dickison walked with one out in the fifth and pinch-runner Brian Conn stole second. Alford also drew a free pass and a groundout by Carter put runners on the corners, but CSC starter Brock Kartheiser balked in the run for a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats broke through in the seventh against Collier, with Jake Pott doubling to start the inning before a one-out single by Alonso Ruz put runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Chris Moussa then singled to right, scoring a run and again putting runners on the corners.
Collier got the second out on a ground ball, but Eli Nieves doubled to leftcenter, plating Ruz and bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Cotter, who struck out swinging to end the game.
Kartheiser (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings.
Cumberland miscues allowed Culver-Stockton to score twice in the first inning of the second contest.
Cotter was hit to leadoff and Kartheiser singled to rightcenter before Fischer struck out the next two batters. Dominick Minogue reached on an error by Simmons at third base, which also allowed a run to score, and then Ruz got aboard on an error by leftfielder Collado, with Kartheiser scoring on the play.
The Bulldogs tied the game quickly, though, with Stiles drawing a one-out walk before Viera’s two-run shot to leftcenter against CSC starter Nathan Halliday.
In the second Dishman led off with a single and Byrd doubled to rightcenter with two outs, scoring Collado for a 3-2 edge.
CU added another run in the third when Viera led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Alford’s one-out single to leftcenter for a 4-2 lead.
Fischer worked around baserunners in every inning, including a leadoff double from Kartheiser in the third, a walk and a single in the fourth and a leadoff single in the sixth.
The Wildcats scored an unearned run in the fifth, with Cotter reaching on an error by Viera to start the inning. Kartheiser’s groundout moved the runner to second and Hillier’s single down the rightfield line cut the CU lead to one.
Cotter was hit to start the seventh as well, but Kartheiser flied out before a groundout by Hillier pushed the runner to second. Fischer got Pott to groundout to third to end the game.
