Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Jarrett Plunkett posted five hits with five runs scored, Justin Byrd hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs and Ryan Simmons added three hits and four RBIs in Cumberland’s 10-6 and 11-5 victories over Lindenwood-Belleville on Wednesday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Bulldogs (10-21) collected a season-high 16 hits in the opening contest and registered 14 more in the second game. Plunkett was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and one RBI in the first outing and added two more hits with a solo homer in the second game.
Byrd belted a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener and added a two-run shot in the sixth. He finished the day with four hits and four runs scored.
Ryan Dickison also drove in four runs in the twinbill, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning of the first game.
Cameron Lenz (1-2) picked up the victory for the Bulldogs with six innings of work in the opener, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. LU-Belleville starter Cody Calhoun (1-6) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in four innings.
Drew Chester (1-0) tossed four innings to get the win in the second game, giving up four runs on five hits. LU-Belleville’s Michael Sabotino took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in three innings.
The Bulldogs started quickly in the opener, with Phil Stiles reaching on an infield single to short and Plunkett following with a double down the leftfield line. Byrd drilled a 2-1 pitch over the wall in rightfield, a line drive shot for his second home run of the season and a 3-0 CU lead after one inning.
Lenz worked around an error and a single by Drew Fair in the third inning, with Pete Colclasure fouling out and Sean Keeney taking a called third strike to end the threat.
Stiles chopped a double down the leftfield line to leadoff the bottom of the third and scored on Plunkett’s chopper over the third baseman’s head for a 4-0 advantage.
The Lynx (12-18) got a run back in the fourth when Christian Cavaness reached on an error and stole second. He went to third on Dylan Skinner’s groundout and scored on a single to rightcenter by Matt Lawver.
Fair drew a leadoff walk in the fifth before singles from Hayden Stevens and Coleclasure loaded the bases. Keeney grounded into a doubleplay, but pinch-runner Zach Fortner scored on the play, cutting the CU lead to 4-2.
Cumberland broke the game open in the bottom of the inning with four runs on four hits, beginning with a walk by Plunkett. Byrd singled to right, putting runners on the corners, and Byrd stole second.
Tyler Alford then singled to left, plating one run, before Dickison’s three-run homer to left, his fourth of the season, extending the Bulldog advantage to 8-2.
In the sixth Cavaness walked to leadoff, stole second and went to third when the throw bounced into centerfield. He scored just ahead of the throw from Dakota Byrd on a flyout from Lawver. Trey Meier was hit and Jaren Linton singled, but Fair fouled out to end the inning without any more runs coming across.
The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame, again started by Plunkett with a bunt single. Byrd belted his second homer of the game, this one to rightcenter, for the final CU runs of the contest.
LU-Belleville posted three runs in the seventh against CU reliever Jackson Yates, who walked Colclasure with one out before a single by Keeney. Skinner’s line drive just cleared the wall in leftfield with two outs, cutting the deficit to 10-6, but Lawver grounded out to end the contest.
Cumberland started the second game with another big inning, scoring five times in the first.
A single from Plunkett was sandwiched by walks to Stiles and Byrd, loading the bases. Dickison then singled to left, plating one run, and with one out Simmons drove a ball to deep center.
Lindenwood-Belleville’s Cavaness started in but then scrambled back, unable to catch up to the ball near the warning track. Simmons pulled in with a triple, clearing the bases, and a single to center by Jonathan Larson scored the final run of the inning for the Bulldogs.
Plunkett’s drive to leftcenter in the second on the 14th pitch of the at-bat gave CU a 6-0 lead.
Brock Johns answered with a solo shot with one out in the third for the Lynx and Stevens hit a towering homer with two outs in the frame, making it a 6-2 advantage for the Bulldogs.
Simmons and Larson both singled in the third and scored on Conor Dishman’s double to rightcenter. With two outs Stiles chopped a ball to third. Lawver booted the grounder, allowing Dishman to score for a 9-2 lead.
Lawver doubled to rightcenter to start the fourth but was called out on appeal for missing first base. Fortner was hit with one out before Dylan Arvai ripped a line drive over the rightfield wall for a two-run homer.
Dickison started the bottom of the inning with a single and Kyle Allen tomahawked a double down the leftfield line. Simmons then blooped a double into short rightcenter, plating a run, but the Bulldogs stranded the bases loaded, getting just one run in the frame for a 10-4 advantage.
Cavaness walked with two outs in the fifth, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Skinner’s single to center, cutting the deficit to 10-5.
Allen led off the sixth with a double to leftcenter and pinch-hitter Richard Carter singled to right, putting runners on the corners. Zach Cole’s groundout scored pinch-runner Taylor Dorsey with the final run of the contest.
Cumberland will play at the University of Pikeville on Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
