Smith, Plunkett lead 3-1 CU victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Stevie Smith tossed a complete game and Jarrett Plunkett put Cumberland ahead for good with a solo home run in the eighth inning in a 3-1 victory over Lindsey Wilson in baseball action Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs (14-23, 7-6 Mid-South) dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 6-4, with the Blue Raiders (25-15, 9-4) scoring five times in the second game to take control of the seven-inning contest.

Smith (4-3) allowed one run on four hits with one walk and one hit batter. He retired 13 of the first 15 batters of the game and picked off one of those that reached that he walked. Lindsey Wilson managed just seven baserunners in the contest and had multiple runners only one.

Justin Byrd’s RBI single plated Hector Viera in the bottom of the sixth after the Blue Raiders took the lead in the top half of the inning on an RBI double from Steven Paredes.

Plunkett hit a solo homer with two outs in the seventh, his second of the season. Phil Stiles followed with a single and came all the way around to score when an errant throw from Paredes got away down the rightfield line on a grounder by Viera, allowing the Bulldogs to score an insurance run.

Ryan Hartman (7-2) suffered the loss for LWC, giving up one earned run on five hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out six.

In the second game five straight singles plus a hit batter and then another single allowed the Blue Raiders to plate five runs against CU starter Jake Collier. Brandon Munoz and Kory Weeks each collected two hits and two RBIs and Ryan Harper added two hits as well for Lindsey Wilson.

Carlos Pena (2-2) worked five innings to get the win, giving up four runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Chris Erker got the final six outs for his second save, giving up two hits and a walk.

Collier (3-5) went the distance for Cumberland, allowing six runs on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

In the opener Daryl Blaskovich singled to leadoff the LWC sixth inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Woody. Paredes followed with a double to rightcenter, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge.

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning, with Viera reaching on an error by second baseman Blaskovich and reaching second on the play. Byrd then singled through the right side, knotting the game at one.

Plunkett’s home run preceded the Stiles single and throwing error by Paredes that allowed the final run of the game to score.

In the second game the Blue Raiders scored five runs on six hits in the second inning, starting with singles from Aaron Ashton and Fabian Chirino before a bunt single by Ryan Harper loaded the bases.

RBI singles from Weeks and Woody followed before Edgar Lebron was hit, forcing in a run. Munoz then singled down the rightfield line, plating two runs for a 5-0 advantage.

The Blue Raiders added another run in the fifth when Ashton walked with one out and Harper drew a free pass with two outs. Weeks’ single to center scoring Ashton for a 6-0 lead.

Cumberland posted four runs in the bottom of the inning against Pena and got the tying run to the plate before bouncing into a doubleplay.

Plunklett reached to start the inning after a bad throw to first on a grounder by Pena, who then hit Stiles. Viera singled to right and Plunkett came across on a throwing error by rightfielder Alex Bautista. Byrd followed with a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the year, cutting the deficit to 6-4.

Ryan Dickison then singled, but Tyler Alford bounced into a 4-6-3 doubleplay to end the threat.

Byrd reached on a bunt single with one out in the seventh and Alford singled to left with two outs, but Byrd was thrown out trying to take third on the play to end the game.

Cumberland and Lindsey Wilson finish the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
