Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Clint Meadows scattered 11 hits in a complete-game victory and Justin Byrd posted two hits with two RBIs and two runs scored in Cumberland’s 4-2 victory over Lindsey Wilson in baseball action Sunday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Bulldogs (15-23, 8-6 Mid-South) clinched the series by winning the rubber game with the Blue Raiders (25-16, 9-5).
Meadows (2-0) stranded eight LWC runners in the contest, giving up two runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. He worked around baserunners in every inning and took advantage of two baserunning mistakes, with Ryan Harper tagged out trying to take third on a ground ball to short in the second inning and Aaron Ashton was doubled off on a line drive to right in the fourth.
Byrd reached on an error and scored on Ryan Dickison’s single in the first inning and hit a long solo homer in the third. He also doubled in the fifth and plated the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Dickison and Tyler Alford each collected two hits as well for the Bulldogs.
Four Lindsey Wilson players – Brandon Munoz, Alex Bautista, Ashton and Harper – all posted two hits, while Bautista scored twice and both of Harper’s hits were doubles.
Scott Sebald (6-3) suffered the loss, giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
The Bulldogs got a run in the first thanks to a two-out error by Sebald, who fumbled a slow roller by Byrd and then threw it away down the rightfield line, allowing Byrd to reach second. Dickison followed with an RBI single to right for an early lead for CU.
Byrd’s mammoth blast to rightfield with two outs in the third extended the advantage to 2-0 for Cumberland.
The Blue Raiders cut the deficit in half in the fourth when Bautista led off with a single to center, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Ashton’s single to center.
Lindsey Wilson tied the contest in the sixth with doubles from Bautista and Fabian Chirino.
Cumberland retook the lead in the seventh, taking advantage of another throwing error by a Blue Raider third baseman.
Ryan Simmons walked with one out and Phil Stiles doubled down the leftfield line before Hector Viera hit a jam shot down the third base line to Harper. Pinch-runner Taylor Dorsey made a heads-up read, scampering back to the bag. Harper tried to set his feet and make the throw to first, but it was wide of the bag, allowing Dorsey to score.
Byrd followed with a deep fly ball to right, just missing another homer, but it was good enough to plate Stiles for a 4-2 Bulldog advantage.
Harper led off the ninth with a double just inside the third base bag, but Kory Weeks grounded to third, pinch-hitter Russ Morse struck out and Edgar Lebron grounded back to the mound to end the game, with Meadows making a terrific backhand stab of the chopper and the throw to first to finish off the win.
Cumberland is scheduled to play at Freed-Hardeman on Monday at 5 p.m. and returns home Tuesday for a 2 p.m. contest versus Martin Methodist.
