Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Cameron Lenz tossed a complete game, allowing no earned runs with nine strikeouts, Ryan Dickison drove in three runs in the first three innings and Cumberland posted five doubles and five two-out RBIs in a 7-3 victory over Freed-Hardeman on Monday afternoon in Henderson, Tenn.
The Bulldogs (16-23) snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Lions (27-10), who managed only three hits, three walks and a hit batter against Lenz. Dickison gave Cumberland a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first and his two-run double tied the contest in the third.
Brandon Larson’s two-out single plated Jarrett Plunkett, who had doubled the batter before, and gave CU the lead for good in the sixth. Justin Byrd’s two-out single in the seventh scored Phil Stiles and the Bulldogs added two more runs in the eighth, including an RBI single by Jake Collier and a run-scoring double from Stiles.
FHU scored three unearned runs in the second before Lenz (3-2) settled down, retiring 21 of the last 25 batters of the game. The righthander walked batters in the third and seventh innings (picking one of those off), hit a batter in the eighth and gave up a single in the ninth, the Lions’ first hit since the second inning.
Jordan Newby (5-1), the second of five Freed-Hardeman hurlers, took the loss, giving up one run on four hits in three innings. FHU starter JC Chapman tossed three innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
Stiles finished with two hits and two runs scored, Collier collected two hits in his first start as the designated hitter and Byrd scored twice.
Byrd helped give Cumberland an early lead, walking and stealing second in the first. Dickison followed with a single to left, plating the run for a 1-0 edge.
The Lions took advantage of two CU errors along with two hits and a walk to score three times in the second.
Zac Carter singled to leadoff, stole second and took third when Tyler Alford’s throw got away. He scored on Bob Seda’s single to left and he took second on a passed ball. With one out Ethan Mayberry walked and both runners came around to score when Orlando Collado’s throw to first on a ground ball from Griffin Siebert was wild and rolled down the rightfield line.
Cumberland answered quickly in the third, with Stiles reaching on an infield single with one out and Byrd getting hit with two outs. Both runners scored on Dickison’s double to leftcenter, knotting the game at three.
In the sixth Plunkett doubled with two outs and Larson followed with an RBI single.
Stiles walked in the seventh, moved to second on Hector Viera’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Byrd’s single on the left side.
Cumberland added two more runs in the eighth, starting with a two-out walk to Larson, who took second on a wild pitch and scored on Collier’s single up the middle. Ryan Simmons then singled before an RBI double from Stiles plated the final run of the game.
Cumberland is scheduled to play Tuesday at home at 2 p.m. against Martin Methodist and travels to Union University on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest.
