Error proves costly in extra-inning loss

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Zach Cole’s fielding error in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed Chris Allen to score from first, giving 15th-ranked Campbellsville a 3-2 victory over Cumberland in baseball action Friday night at HIG Field in Campbellsville, Ky.

The Bulldogs (16-25, 8-7 Mid-South) and Tigers (23-7, 11-4) conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. CT.

Cumberland had its chances in the loss, stranding 11 runners, including six in scoring position. The Bulldogs wasted another strong outing from Stevie Smith, who allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out two before giving way to Stephen Fischer (2-7), who suffered the tough-luck defeat.

Allen led off the bottom of the 10th with a bunt single and Miguel Solano’s grounder was booted by Cole, with the ball bouncing away and allowing Allen to score on the play.

The Bulldogs put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the inning, but Ryan Dickison was picked off at third and Jonathan Larson struck out to end the threat.

Campbellsville intentionally walked Justin Byrd twice in the game to load the bases, the first time in the third inning after a single by Eddie McDaniels and a double from Phil Stiles, but Hector Viera and Dicksion both grounded out to end the threat.

The Tigers did the same thing in the seventh inning after Cumberland plated an unearned run. Larson reached on an error by third baseman Casey Scott and pinch-runner Taylor Dorsey moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Simmons. Stiles was hit with two outs and with the runners moving on a full count pitch, Viera singled to left, plating Dorsey and giving CU a 2-1 edge.

Byrd was walked again to load the bases and Dickison struck out to end the inning without any further damage.

The lead was short-lived, with Ricky McCulloch doubling with one out in the bottom of the inning and scoring on Alex Scanlan’s two-out single through the right side. McCulloch and Scanlan combined for five of Campbellsville’s 10 hits in the contest.

Scanlan walked to start the third inning, went to second on Allen’s sac bunt and scored on Solano’s single to right.

Cumberland knotted the game at one in the fifth when Simmons was hit to leadoff and moved to second on a bunt by Eddie McDaniels. Stiles then singled to left, putting runners on the corners, and Viera’s sacrifice fly knotted the game at one, setting up the final play in the 10th.

Campbellsville starter Mario Morales worked 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Logan Truex (1-0), the fourth Tigers hurler of the night, picked up the win with 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with four strikeouts.
