LEBANON, Tenn. – Nick Morehead struck out 11 in eight shutout innings in the first game and Alex Kline’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth drove in the game-winner in the second contest, as 15th-ranked Campbellsville University swept a doubleheader from Cumberland, 7-0 and 7-6, in baseball action Saturday at HIG Field in Campbellsville, Ky.

The Bulldogs (16-27, 8-9 Mid-South) committed four errors in the opener that led to four unearned runs for the homestanding Tigers (25-7, 13-4) and gave away two more runs in the second contest with an errant doubleplay throw to first that allowed two runs to come across.

Cumberland out-hit the Tigers in both contests – 7-6 in the opener and 11-9 in the second game – but the errors were the difference in the 7-0 loss and CU stranded eight baserunners in the final game.

Eddie McDaniels collected two hits in the opener and he and Tyler Alford were the only players in the starting lineup not to strikeout against Morehead (8-0), who walked one and gave up six hits in eight strong innings.

The lefthander retired nine of the first 10 batters of the game and got a line drive doubleplay to end the fourth and a popout by McDaniels to finish the seventh, the only innings he allowed multiple baserunners.

Clint Meadows (2-1) suffered the loss for CU, giving up three earned runs on six hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Alford and Ryan Dickison each posted two hits, Jake Collier and Dickison drove in two runs apiece and Justin Byrd scored twice in the second game, which the Bulldogs tied in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI from Collier, who also pitched in the contest.

The game included three lead changes and two ties, with Campbellsville answering each time that Cumberland pulled ahead.

Logan Truex (2-0), who picked up the win in Friday night’s Tiger victory, tossed the final two innings for the win again, allowing one unearned runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

Collier (3-6) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Bulldogs looked to take the lead in the opener in the fourth inning after consecutive singles from Hector Viera and Byrd to start the inning. Both runners stole, going to second and third, but Collier lined into an inning-ending doubleplay.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Carlos Torres led off with a single to center and moved to second on Jaime Valle’s sacrifice bunt. Ricky McCulloch was hit, but Meadows struck out Kline before giving up an RBI single to Garrett Everhart for a 1-0 lead for the home team.

Campbellsville added to the advantage in the fifth with a leadoff walk to Alex Scanlan and a single by Casey Scott. Miguel Solano’s sac bunt pushed the runners to second and third and Torres was intentionally walked, loading the bases, before a throwing error by Meadows allowed one run to score and another came across on a wild pitch.

In the sixth Kline walked and Everhart doubled to start the frame. One run scored on a ground ball by Richard Ramirez and Scott’s squeeze bunt plated another for a 5-0 Tigers lead.

Torres was hit to begin the seventh inning and scored on a two-out error by the Bulldogs, similar to Friday night’s loss. In the eighth Scanlan walked and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on yet another CU error, the fourth of the game for the visitors, extending the advantage to 7-0.

Cumberland scored twice in the first inning of the second game on three hits.

Viera led off with a single up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch. Byrd’s groundout pushed the runner to third and Alford followed with a walk. Collier helped his own cause with a single to center and Dickison also singled to center, plating pinch-runner Zach Cole.

Campbellsville responded with three runs in the third, with everything starting with two outs.

Scanlan doubled down the leftfield line after a pair of groundouts and Scott walked before an RBI double to leftcenter from Solano. Torres was intentionally walked, loading the bases, and Valle also doubled down the leftfield line, plating two runs for a 3-2 Tigers advantage.

In the fourth Phil Stiles doubled to rightcenter with one out, ending the day for Campbellsville starter Jake Pannunzio, who allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Ryan Simmons followed with an RBI single to center, tying the contest at three.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning when McCulloch was hit to leadoff and Kline doubled to center, making it 4-3 for the home team.

Cumberland came right back in the fifth, with a solo homer from Byrd, his sixth of the season, knotting the score at four. Alford then doubled to leftcenter and Dickison’s two-out single to left plated Cole again for a 5-4 CU edge.

That lead didn’t last long, with Solano singling to right with one out in the bottom of the frame. Torres singled to right and the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch before an intentional walk to Valle loaded the bases.

McColloch bounced into what looked to be an inning-ending 6-4-3 doubleplay, but the relay throw from Stiles was low and got away, allowing two runs to score, giving Campbellsville the lead again, 6-5.

The Bulldogs tied the game again in the seventh against Truex, with Viera reaching on an error by Solano at second base to start the inning. With two outs Alford singled to the right side and Byrd reached third on the play. Collier’s ground ball plated the run, knotting the game again, this time at seven.

In the eighth Valle led off with a double to left and with one out Kline singled up the middle, scoring pinch-runner Gentry Kinsella with the game-winner and giving Campbellsville the three-game sweep.

Cumberland hosts Bethel University on Monday at 2 p.m. and finishes the regular season at home next weekend against Georgetown College.
