Georgetown sweeps two from CU

LEBANON, Tenn. – Georgetown College scored twice in the ninth inning to win the opener and Tyler Arthru tossed a complete game in the second contest aided by home runs from Duran Elmore and Rick Reyes, as the Tigers swept a doubleheader from Cumberland, 6-4 and 4-1, on Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs (17-29, 8-11 Mid-South) and Tigers (18-14, 11-8) conclude the series Saturday at Noon with a single game. Senior Day activities for 10 CU players will take place before the contest.

RBI singles from David Higuera and Michael Encinas gave Georgetown a 6-4 win in the opener. Encinas collected three hits and scored twice and Higuera was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Tigers, who erased 2-0 and 4-2 deficits in the contest to post the victory.

Higuera’s solo homer got Georgetown on the board and Encinas scored on an RBI double from Elmore to tie the game at two in the third. Steven Mancilla’s two-out, two-run single in the fifth plated Higuera and Encinas, knotting the game at four.

The Bulldogs managed just five baserunners with three hits over the last six innings in the contest against three Georgetown hurlers. Ryan Dickison’s two-run home run in the second put CU ahead and he was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Justin Byrd added two hits and a run scored.

Stevie Smith tossed eight innings but got no decision, allowing four runs on six hits with nine strikeouts. Stephen Fischer (2-8) took the loss, giving up two runs on three runs in one-third of an inning.

Georgetown starter Shawn Kennedy II allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out five. Sean Hale (4-0) worked two scoreless innings to get the win and Craig Ramsey got the final three outs for his third save, giving up a single to Hector Viera but inducing a game-ending doubleplay by Tyler Alford.

Arthur (3-4) was the story in the second game for the Tigers, giving up one run on four hits in seven innings. The righthander walked two and struck out six. Higuera collected two of Georgetown’s eight hits in the contest.

Clint Meadows (2-2) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Encinas singled in the second and scored on Higuera’s double to leftcenter and Elmore started the third inning with a home run to left, his third of the year.

Reyes homered to left to leadoff the sixth inning and Ryan Rodriguez’s two-out RBI single plated Damian Rutherford for a 4-0 Tigers advantage.

The Bulldogs only run came in the seventh when Phil Stiles, who posted two of the club’s four hits, tripled to rightcenter with one out and scored on a wild pitch.

In the first game Jake Collier reached on an error with one out in the second before Dickison’s two-run home run to center, his team-leading seventh of the year.

Higuera’s leadoff home run in the third cut the lead in half and Encinas followed with an infield single. He went to second on Rodriguez’s sacrifice bunt and scored to tie the game on Elmore’s double down the leftfield line.

Cumberland answered right back in the bottom of the inning, with Byrd bunting his way on with one out before a walk to Alford. Collier’s RBI single to rightcenter plated one run and Dickison followed with an RBI single through the right side for a 4-2 CU edge.

Georgetown knotted the game again in the fifth when Higuera drew a leadoff walk and Encinas singled through the right side. Rodriguez’s bunt single loaded the bases and two runs scored on Mancilla’s two-out single to center.

Smith retired the final nine batters he faced before giving way to Fischer in the ninth.

Tanner Unkel singled to right with one out and Higuera’s double down the leftfield line plated Unkel. Higuera took third on the throw to the plate and scored on a single through the right side by Encinas.

The Bulldogs threated just once after the third inning, with two-out singles from Brandon Larson and Ryan Simmons in the fifth, but Eddie McDaniels grounded out to end that inning. Viera walked in the fourth, Larson was hit in the eighth and Viera singled in the ninth before a fielder’s choice by Byrd and then the doubleplay from Alford to end the contest.
