Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Clint Meadows tossed a complete-game four-hitter and Phil Stiles and Ryan Simmons each posted three hits and scored twice in Cumberland’s 6-1 victory over 19th-ranked Campbellsville University on Thursday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
With the victory the Bulldogs (20-29) advance to the winner’s bracket final on Friday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s late game between Lindsey Wilson and Shawnee State.
Meadows got 17 ground ball outs and induced three doubleplays, throwing just 104 pitches in the nine-inning win. The senior righthander walked two and struck out two and allowed just two baserunners to reach second base, both in the fourth inning when the Tigers (28-10) plated their only run.
Hector Viera and Justin Byrd each drove in two runs and Stiles and Simmons added one RBI apiece. Cumberland pounded out 12 hits, including three doubles, and now has 27 hits and nine doubles in the two games in the conference tournament.
Meadows outfueled Nick Morehead (9-1), who gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings with three strikeouts. Morehead struck out 11 in eight shutout innings against the Bulldogs two weeks ago, defeating Meadows in that contest.
Cumberland took the lead with three runs in the third inning, starting with a leadoff infield single from Simmons, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Eddie McDaniels. Stiles singled to left, putting runners on the corners, and Viera followed with a two-run double to leftcenter. Byrd’s RBI single to right plated Viera for a 3-0 advantage.
The Tigers cut into the deficit in the fourth after a leadoff double down the leftfield line by Alex Scanlan. Carlos Torres singled through the left side with one out, putting runners on the corners, and Jaime Valle’s groundout to first plated the run.
The Bulldogs answered in the fifth when Simmons was hit to start the frame and McDaniels pushed the runner to second with another sac bunt. Stiles singled up the middle, scoring Simmons, and took second on the throw to the plate. Byrd’s two-out single to right plated Stiles for a 5-1 lead.
Cumberland added an insurance run in the ninth when Jonathan Larson led off with a double to rightcenter and pinch-runner Zach Cole took third on a balk. Simmons’ one-out single to center made it a 6-1 advantage for CU.
