Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Mitch Langer belted a three-run homer and Stephen Fischer tossed his second straight complete game, stranding the tying and go-ahead run in the seventh in Cumberland’s 4-3 victory over Madonna University on a cold and windy Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Cumberland (3-3) salvaged the final game of the series after the Crusaders (2-1) won a doubleheader on Friday.
Kyle Allen’s sacrifice fly put the Phoenix ahead, 1-0, in the second inning, but Madonna tied the contest in the top of the third on a two-out single to left from Ryan Lambrecht.
Cumberland took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, with the rally starting after a two-out strikeout, but catcher Matt Deneau’s throw to first on the ball in the dirt was wild. Nick McGrew then singled before Langer’s first blast of the season to left for a 4-1 advantage.
Taylor Grzelakowski’s RBI infield single in the fourth cut the CU lead to 4-2 and the Crusaders scored a run in the second and got the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Three straight singles to start the seventh, the last one from Jimmy White, made it a one-run game and put runners on second and third with no outs after White stole second. Levi Larmour lined out and Ben Matigian was doubled off third on the play. Pinch-hitter Jalen Thomas was hit but Mike Tibbits flied out to end the contest.
Fischer scattered seven hits and worked out of the jam in the seventh to pick up his second straight win. The righthander allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Madonna had at least one baserunner in five of the seven innings but two line drive doubleplays helped him through the troubles.
Crusaders starter Todd Jones (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run on two hits in two innings. Jack Zimmerman allowed the three-run homer to Langer and Cliff Landess and Patrick Wierimaa tossed three combined shutout innings of relief.
Hector Viera singled with one out in the Cumberland second inning and Ryan Dickison followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Allen followed with the sac fly for a 1-0 edge.
In the third Larmour singled to start the frame and Matt Deneau’s sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. With two outs Lambrecht singled to left, plating Larmour with the tying run.
Zimmerman got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning and struck out Mike Melendez to essentially end the inning, but Deneau’s throw to first was wild. McGrew singled up the middle, setting up Langer’s drive on a 1-0 pitch, his first of the year.
Shane Dokey doubled to start the fourth for Madonna and Grzelakowski’s RBI infield single made it a 4-2 contest, setting up the top of the seventh drama.
Cumberland hosts Brescia University on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and takes on Lyon College in a three-game series at home next weekend.
