Late heroics help baseball sweep Lyon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. – Nick McGrew went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the opener and Cumberland scored three times in the sixth and Tyler Yorko’s single in the seventh drove home the winning run in a doubleheader sweep, 8-3 and 4-3, over Lyon College in baseball action Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland completed the sweep thanks to a three-run first inning in the opener and then some late heroics in the second contest. Ryan Dickison’s two-run triple and Jarrett Plunkett’s run-scoring base hit tied the game in the sixth before Yorko’s walk-off single in the seventh plated Gabe Lares with the winning run.

Tyler Tognarine hit a batter in the second for Cumberland’s only baserunner of the game until back-to-back singles to start the fifth from Mike Melendez and Dickison. A walk to Plunkett loaded the bases, but Tognarine induced three straight groundouts to get out of the jam with the Scots still holding a 3-0 advantage.

The Phoenix broke through in the sixth against the righthander when McGrew walked with one out and Melendez singled with two outs. Dickison followed with a triple to center before Plunkett’s RBI base hit to the left side, knotting the game at three.

In the seventh Lares singled to leadoff and stole second. He moved to third on a groundout by Josh Croft and after an intentional walk to McGrew, Yorko singled to the left side to plate the winning run.

Curtis Hoppe (2-0) picked up the win with a complete game, giving up two runs in the first and then just an unearned run in the fourth. The righthander allowed just two hits, walked four and struck out eight in his second career start.

Tognarine (1-1) suffered the loss for Lyon, giving up four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Stephen Fischer (3-0) tossed his third straight complete game in the opener, allowing three unearned runs on seven hits with one walk and a career-best eight strikeouts. He was provided just about all the offense needed in the first inning with a two-run single from Dickison and a passed ball that plated another run.

Cumberland added single runs in the second, third and fifth innings before McGrew’s second homer of the season, a two-run shot, made it 8-1. Lares scored three times and McGrew twice in the win for CU.

James Clift (0-3) took the loss for the Scots, giving up eight runs, four earned, on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

The scoring started early for the Phoenix in the opener, with Lares reaching on the first of two errors by Lyon shortstop Easton Moore. Richard Carter walked and McGrew singled before a passed ball allowed a run to score. Two batters later Dickison’s single up the middle plated two more for a 3-0 CU lead.

Lares got on base again thanks to an error from Moore to start the second inning and McGrew doubled with two outs before a wild pitch plated Lares for a 4-0 advantage.

Lyon got a run in the third when Kyle Johnson led off with a single and Kohlstedt on a throwing error by Fischer. Plunkett’s miscue in leftfield allowed Johnson to score, but Fischer got three straight groundouts to end the inning without further damage.

Dickison reached on an error to start the third inning, this one on third baseman Dylan Wooten, and two batters later Wooten made another error, allowing Ryan Simmons to reach. Kyle Allen’s single to center scored Dickison for a 5-1 lead.

Hector Viera singled with one out in the fifth for the Phoenix and went to second on Plunkett’s groundout. Simmons then singled through the left side, scoring Viera.

Lares singled to leadoff the sixth before McGrew’s one-out, two-run homer to left finished the scoring for Cumberland.

The Scots plated three runs in the seventh against Fischer, starting with an error by Simmons. Evan Johnson singled with one out and Kyle Kohlstedt walked to load the bases. Wooten’s two-run single to center cut the CU lead to 8-3 before Joseph Sitzman grounded out to end the contest.

Lyon started quickly in the second game against Hoppe, with Kohlstedt walking to leadoff and Andrew Sauceda following with a bunt single. Cumberland did not record an out on a ground ball by Moore, loading the bases, and Wooten walked, forcing in a run. Sitzman’s groundout plated another for an early 2-0 Scots advantage.

Logan Reddick was hit with two outs in the fourth for the Scots and went to second on a passed ball. Keegan Floyd’s single to rightcenter put the Scots ahead, 3-0, before Cumberland’s comeback in the final two innings.

Cumberland hosts 14th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before taking on Judson University in a four-game series next Saturday and Sunday.
