Baseball shuts out Judson in doubleheader

LEBANON, Tenn. – Mike Melendez allowed just three hits and Stephen Fischer gave up four, as the Cumberland hurlers each tossed shutouts for Cumberland in a doubleheader sweep of Judson University, 10-0 and 4-0, on Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Phoenix (9-4) and Eagles (7-7) finish the four-game series with another twinbill on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Cumberland scored in five of six innings in the opener, including RBI doubles from Richard Carter and Ryan Dickison in the first and a solo homer from Josh Croft in the second inning. Kyle Allen’s RBI double and a run-scoring single from Gabe Lares gave CU a 5-0 lead in the fourth before an RBI single by Croft stretched the lead to 6-0 in the fifth.

The Phoenix really broke game open with four more runs in the sixth, with Steven Hollis delivering a pinch-hit, three-run homer to cap the scoring.

Melendez (2-1) walked five and struck out four in his longest outing of the season. The lefthander gave up a leadoff single in the first to Luke Rojas, a double to start the fifth to Ron Sessler and a single in the sixth to Mark DeYoung.

The Eagles had two baserunners in the fourth and seventh innings via a pair of walks and two in the sixth with another free pass after DeYoung’s single, but a pair of doubleplays helped Melendez erase the trouble.

Croft finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Dickison added two hits and Jarrett Plunkett and Taylor Dorsey each scored twice.

Eagles starter Angel Sanchez (2-1) allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings to take the loss, striking out four.

Fischer (4-0) picked up his fourth win in four outings in the second contest, limiting Judson to eight total baserunners in the game. He allowed two singles in the first and two more in the fifth and worked around errors in the third and seventh innings. The righthander struck out four and retired 10-of-11 batters after the pair of two-out singles in the first.

Lares walked and Hector Viera tripled for the Phoenix in the first inning and Grant House’s two-run single in the fourth plated Ryan Simmons and Bo Saunders to extend the lead to 3-0. Mitch Langer tripled in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Yorko for the final run of the game for CU, which managed only five hits in the contest.

Judson’s DJ Spears took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

Cumberland scored twice in the first inning in the opening game, starting with a one-out double from Melendez. Carter switched placed with Melendez with his own two-bagger and two batters later, Dickison also doubled for a 2-0 advantage.

Croft solo homer down the rightfield line with one out in the second made it a 3-0 game for CU.

In the fourth Croft led off with a walk and Allen followed with an RBI double. Lares then singled up the middle, plating Dorsey for a 5-0 lead.

Langer doubled down the leftfield line with one out in the fifth before a two-out single to left from Croft extended the advantage to 6-0.

In the sixth Melendez walked with one out and pinch-hitter Daijon Whitfield also drew a free pass. Both players moved up on a wild pitch and Plunkett scored on the play on a throwing error by Judson catcher Conor Grove.

Dorsey struck out but reached first on a passed ball, putting runners on the corners for Hollis, who delivered the three-run homer for the final runs of the contest.
