10-run first carries Phoenix to 19-2 victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Ryan Dickison, Tyler Yorko and Jarrett Plunkett each drove in three runs and Cumberland scored 10 times in the first inning and never looked back in a 19-2 victory over Brescia University in baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland (16-11) won its third straight game overall and hosts the University of Pikeville this weekend in a Mid-South Conference series. The Phoenix pounded out 20 hits and played 20 different players in the victory.

Dickison’s bases-clearing triple and Yorko’s solo homer highlighted the 10-run first inning along with RBI singles from Grant House and Mike Melendez and a run-scoring double by Gabe Lares. Yorko added a two-run home run in the third and Plunkett’s three-run shot came in the fourth. Steven Hollis added a two-run homer in the fifth for Cumberland.

Mitch Langer (1-1) tossed five innings to pick up the victory, allowing two runs on six hits. The righthander walked one and struck out four. Erik Barron made his season-debut, striking out two in a scoreless inning.

Nick McGrew reached on an error to start the bottom of the first and Lares followed with a single before Josh Croft was hit, loading the bases. Melendez walked, forcing in a run, and Dickison’s triple cleared the bases. A sacrifice fly to right by Ryan Simmons made it 5-0 CU with just one out in the inning.

Yorko homered to left, forcing a pitching change for the Bearcats (6-17). BU starter Chad Ryan (0-3) allowed six runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.

Plunkett doubled down the leftfield line and scored on House’s single up the middle. With two outs Lares doubled to leftcenter, plating pinch-runner Bo Saunders, and the inning was extended by another error by Brescia.

Melendez singled home a run and Dickison singled, loading the bases. Simmons walked, forcing in another run, and Yorko’s strikeout ended the inning, with 16 Cumberland players coming to the plate.

Reed Rounder’s solo homer to start the second got the Bearcats on the board. Josh Wetzel walked and Mason Sturdivant doubled down the rightfield line before a sac fly from Diego Johnson made it a 10-2 contest.

House and Saunders both singled in the second inning for the Phoenix before a two-out hit by Croft plated pinch-runner Taylor Dorsey.

Parker Cash doubled to leadoff the third for Cumberland and two batters later, Yorko homered to left.

In the fourth Richard Carter and Simmons both singled and with two outs, Plunkett belted a three-run shot to left, extending the lead to 16-2.

Saunders led off the fifth with a double down the rightfield line before a two-run shot by Hollis to right. Later in the inning Carter walked and scored on Kyle Howard’s two-out single to center to score the final run of the game.

Cumberland hosts the University of Pikeville in a three-game Mid-South Conference series this weekend starting Friday at 2 p.m.
