Baseball drops pair at home

LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville used two big innings in the opener and one in the second game to sweep Cumberland, 8-4 and 10-0, and complete the sweep in baseball action Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bears (14-9, 4-2 Mid-South) scored four runs in the first and then three more in the ninth in the first game of the day. Pikeville struck for six runs in the fourth inning to break open a 1-0 game in the second contest.

Four Cumberland (16-14, 2-4) hurlers allowed 25 hits and issued seven walks to Pikeville in the doubleheader. Justin Beatly drove in two of the Bears’ four runs in the first inning in the opener and then cleared the bases with a double in the ninth after the Phoenix had pulled within, 5-4.

Cumberland starter Curtis Hoppe (4-2) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Parker Cash pitched well in relief before running into trouble in the ninth, allowing three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Nick McGrew and Hector Viera each collected two hits for Cumberland in the loss.

Bruce Bell (4-1) picked up the win for the Bears, giving up three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. Logan Sales posted his fourth save of the year, tossing three hitless innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Josh Bailey registered three hits in Pikeville’s 14-hit attack.

Travis Haen’s two-run single was part of a six-run fourth in the second game, with Bailey, Beatly and Connor Osborne also plating runs with hits in the inning. Haen posted three hits and drove in three runs while Jacob DiThomas added two hits and scored four times in the 10-0 victory.

Aaron Hedgecock (2-0) tossed seven shutout innings for the win, allowing two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Erik Barron made his first start of the year for CU and got the loss, giving up one run in three innings before allowing six runs on five hits in the fourth.

Pikeville got four runs on three hits in the first inning of the opener to take control of the contest.

Scottie Whitaker drew a leadoff walk and Haen was hit before a bunt single by Bailey loaded the bases. Anthony Roberts was then hit, forcing in a run, and Beatly’s single to rightcenter plated a pair of runs. DiThomas singled, putting runners on the corners, and a double steal by the Bears scored the final run of the frame.

Hoppe ran into trouble again in the third when Bailey led off with a single up the middle and Roberts was hit. A fielder’s choice and a balk gave Pikeville a 5-0 advantage.

Cumberland got a run back in the bottom of the inning, as Viera walked to start the frame. He went to second on a groundout by Richard Carter and moved to third on Kyle Allen’s lineout to right. McGrew’s two-out single to center plated Viera, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Cash worked around a single from Osborne and a double by Whitaker with one out in the fourth, getting a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam.

The Phoenix loaded the bases in the fifth, with Viera singling down the rightfield line to leadoff. With two outs McGrew and Lares both walked, but Josh Croft lined out to center to end the inning.

Cumberland finally broke through in the sixth, starting with a one-out single by Ryan Dickison. Mitch Langer followed with a walk, ending the day for Bell. Viera reached on an infield single, loading the bases, and Carter’s single to left scored Dickison. Allen’s sacrifice fly plated Langer, making it 5-3.

Pikeville nearly added to the lead in the seventh when Bailey led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on the throw, but Cash induced a groundout with a drawn-in infield before striking out Erik Manning. Beatly flied out to end the inning with CU still trailing by two.

Lares walked and Croft was hit to begin the bottom of the inning and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Dickison lined out to center, scoring Lares, but Langer flied out to end the frame with Cumberland still trailing by a run.

Pikeville broke the game open with three runs in the ninth, starting with a leadoff single by Haen. Roberts and Manning both singled with one out, loading the bases, and Beatly’s double to rightcenter cleared the bags, giving the Bears an 8-4 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth McGrew was hit to start the frame and Croft walked, but a groundout and a flyout preceded Dickison’s free pass, loading the bases. Langer grounded out to end the contest, with Cumberland stranding 11 runners in the loss.

DiThomas and Haen both singled to start the second game and a one-out single through the left side by Roberts gave the Bears another first-inning lead. Pikeville scored eight runs in the first inning in the three-game series.

Roberts walked the leadoff the fourth and Manning and Beatly followed with singles, with Roberts scoring on the second base hit. Jay Vincent’s sacrifice bunt pushed the runners to second and third and Manning scored on a wild pitch. Cody Stinnett was hit and Osborne singled to right, plating Beatly.

Two batters later Haen drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle and Bailey followed with an RBI single for a 7-0 Bears advantage.

DiThomas walked to leadoff the sixth and Haen doubled before a line drive to left by Bailey scored DiThomas.

In the seventh Osborne and DiThomas both singled with two outs, with Osborne taking third on the second base hit. He scored on a wild pitch and DiThomas came across on an infield error.

Cumberland managed just five baserunners against Hedgecock, but one was erased on a doubleplay in the first. Viera and Ryan Simmons both walked in the third but were stranded at second and third and Simmons doubled and Grant House was hit in the fifth.

Cumberland hosts Huntington University on Monday at 2 p.m. before embarking on its longest road trip of the year, five games, beginning Tuesday at 23rd-ranked Bryan College.
