Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Steven Hollis went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs and senior Hector Viera added three hits and three runs, as Cumberland scored nine runs in its final three at-bats in a 12-6 victory over Huntington University in baseball action Monday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Phoenix (17-14) scored three times in the sixth and five more runs in the seventh before tacking on another in the eighth to take a 12-3 advantage. The Foresters (3-14) plated three runs in the ninth, including an RBI double from Jamar Weaver.
Ryan Dickison came off the bench to collect two hits with a solo homer and two runs scored, while Bo Saunders and Tyler Yorko each drove in a pair of runs in the victory for CU.
Mitch Langer (2-1) tossed six innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out five to get his second straight win. Caleb Pitts worked three innings for the save, giving up three unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Huntington starter Tyson Dietrich allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Brock Gower (2-3), the second of four Foresters hurlers, suffered the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
Huntington scored a run in the first when Dalton Combs singled with two outs and Michael Crowley’s line drive to right was misplayed by Brian Conn, allowing Combs to come all the way around.
Cumberland answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with singles from Viera and Hollis. Parker Cash walked, loading the bases with two outs, and Kyle Allen was hit, forcing in a run. Saunders then singled through the left side, plating two runs for a 3-1 CU edge.
The Foresters evened the game in the third, with Adam Roser drawing a leadoff walk and Combs singling with one out. Crowley followed with a two-run double to leftcenter, knotting the score at three.
The Phoenix finally broke the game open with three more runs in the sixth after Dickison and Viera both singled to leadoff and Hollis’ double down the rightfield line scored both runners. Yorko was hit with one out and pinch-hitter Mike Melendez delivered a two-run RBI single to center for a 6-3 lead.
In the seventh Cumberland batted around, starting with a double from Gabe Lares. Viera reached on an error with one out and Hollis drove in two more runs with a single through the right side.
Josh Croft then singled and both runners stole before Yorko’s two-run triple to rightcenter. Pinch-hitter Richard Carter’s RBI single plated Yorko for an 11-3 advantage.
Dickison’s solo homer down the rightfield line, his fifth of the season, pushed the lead to 12-3 heading to the ninth.
Pinch-hitter Nick Ott reached on a passed ball after a strikeout with one out in the ninth for Huntington and stole second. With two outs Jake Hensen walked and Weaver followed with a two-run double down the rightfield line. Pinch-hitter Lucas Hendee then singled to center, scoring Weaver, but TJ Lindstrand grounded out to end the game.
Cumberland begins a five-game road swing on Tuesday at 23rd-ranked Bryan College at 4 p.m. Central Time before heading to St. Catharine College this weekend for a three-game series.
