Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Erik Barron allowed just one run on four hits in nine innings, but Cumberland managed just five hits and committed a costly error in the 10th inning, leading to the game-winning run and a 2-1 victory for St. Catharine College in the series-opener Friday in baseball action at Edelen-Haydon Field in St. Catharine, Ky.
The Phoenix (17-16, 2-5 Mid-South) and Patriots (23-9, 4-3) finish the series with an 11 a.m. CT doubleheader on Saturday.
Gabe Lares’ RBI single in the seventh scores Steven Hollis to tie the game at one for Cumberland, but an error to start the 10th and a one-out RBI single by Tyler Devine provided the Patriots with the win. CU managed just seven total baserunners against SCC starter Daniel Lerma, who walked one and struck out four in nine innings of work.
Ryan Dickison was stranded at third twice in the contest and Mitch Langer and pinch-runner Brian Conn were both left at second base, but that was all the Phoenix could manage. Cumberland finished 1-for-11 in the contest with runners on base.
Barron worked around four hits, five walks and two hit batters to limit the Patriots to just one run. Alfredo Bohorquez’s RBI single in the third scored Reid Battles, but SCC stranded the bases loaded in that inning and two more in the sixth. Hector Quinones’ leadoff double in the eighth also failed to score a run. St. Catharine left 11 on base in all in the contest.
Bohorquez reached on an error by shortstop Nick McGrew to start the 10th and went to second on the errant throw. After a failed bunt attempt, Nicco Lollio was intentionally walked before the RBI single by Devine past second baseman Josh Croft to end the game.
St. Catharine finished with five hits as well and was only 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Jake McCoy (1-2) got the final two outs in the 10th inning for SCC to post the victory, while Parker Cash (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up one run on one hit in a third of an inning.
