Croft's two-run single, Hoppe's shutout lead baseball sweep

LEBANON, Tenn. – Josh Croft’s two-run single in the ninth inning plated the winning runs in the opener and Curtis Hoppe tossed a five-hit shutout in the second game, as Cumberland swept a doubleheader from St. Catharine College, 10-8 and 6-0, on Saturday in baseball action at Edelon-Heyden Field in St. Catharine, Ky.

Cumberland (19-16, 4-5 Mid-South) led the first game 7-2 at one point, but a four-run fifth inning and a single run in the sixth gave the Patriots an 8-7 advantage. CU tied the game in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Ryan Simmons, scoring Mike Melendez.

In the ninth Ryan Dickison singled and Melendez walked and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Croft’s single on the right side plated both for a 10-8 edge.

Melendez got the final three outs for the save, allowing a hit and striking out three. Parker Cash (1-1) picked up the win with 2.2 innings of relief, giving up a run on four hits.

Austin-Willis Greene (0-1), the third of four SCC hurlers, suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs on one hit in 1.1 innings. Patriots starter Marvin Galarza gave up seven runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings, but reliever Joseph Martin kept his team in the game, allowing one run on one hit in 4.1 frames.

Dickison’s two-run double and Croft’s RBI single gave the Phoenix a 3-0 lead after a half inning and Nick McGrew and Hector Viera drove in runs with singles and Dickison plated another with a groundout in the three-run second. Kyle Allen’s base hit scored Simmons for a 7-2 lead in the third.

Hoppe (5-2) worked around two singles in the first and a single in the walk in the seventh, inducing a pair of ground ball doubleplays in his seven innings. The righthander walked two and struck out four to end a personal two-game losing streak. He also threw just 84 pitches in the victory.

Viera’s two-run single in the third gave Cumberland the lead and McGrew plated a run with a triple and Viera followed with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to extend the advantage. Allen added an RBI single in the sixth and Simmons drove home the final run with a single in the seventh.

St. Catharine’s Joan Pena (5-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

Cumberland started quickly in the opener, with McGrew starting the game with a single and Viera adding one as well. Dickison’s double to rightcenter plated both runners and groundouts by Melendez and Croft moved Dickison around for a 3-0 lead after a half inning.

St. Catharine (22-11, 4-5) came back with two runs in their half of the inning, with Josh Wenning drawing a leadoff walk and scoring on a triple down the rightfield line by Alfredo Bohorquez. Nicco Lollio’s groundout plated Bohorquez to cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the second Allen walked with one out and Jarrett Plunkett reached on a bunt single before an RBI single to right by McGrew. Viera’s bunt single scored a run and Dickison’s groundout plated another for a 6-2 advantage.

Simmons was hit by Pena with one out in the third and Gabe Lares singled to left. Allen followed with an RBI single to right for a 7-2 lead, ending the day for Galarza.

The Patriots got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Wenning singled with one out and after a fielder’s choice, Bohorquez stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Hector Quinones.

St. Catharine tied the game in the fifth with four runs on three hits, but the inning started with a walks to Reid Battles and Wenning. Bohorquez’s sacrifice bunt pushed the runners to second and third and Quinones followed with a two-run single to right.

Lollio then tripled to left, scoring Quinones, and Tyler Devine’s single to left tied the game seven and ended the day for Cumberland starter Stephen Fischer, who allowed seven runs on eight hits with three walks in 4.1 innings.

In the sixth Santiago Arce singled up the middle with one out and Wenning added a two-out single to left. Bohorquez then singled to center, scoring pinch-runner Carlos Cespedes and giving SCC an 8-7 edge.

Cumberland knotted the game in the seventh when Melendez doubled down the leftfield line to leadoff and went to third on Croft’s fly ball to right. Simmons’ groundout scored the run for an 8-8 game.

In the ninth Dickison singled up the middle to leadoff and Melendez walked. Dickison and pinch-runner Brian Conn moved up on a passed ball and scored on Croft’s single for a 10-8 lead.

Cumberland broke through in the second game with two runs in the third, with Plunkett reaching on an error with one out. McGrew then singled to left and took second on the throw when Plunkett slid in safely at third. Viera’s single up the middle plated two runs for the early advantage.

Allen doubled down the leftfield line to leadoff the fifth for CU and McGrew’s one-out triple down the rightfield line scored pinch-runner Bo Saunders. Viera’s fly ball to right added another run for a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth Simmons walked with one out and Lares singled through the right side, putting runners on the corners. Allen then singled to right, plating Conn for a 5-0 advantage.

Melendez walked with two outs in the seventh and Croft followed with a single before an RBI single up the middle by Simmons scored pinch-runner Taylor Dorsey with the final run of the game.

Cumberland heads to 10th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. Central Time contest to finish a five-game road swing. CU returns home next weekend, taking on the University of the Cumberlands in a three-game series at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
