Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Kyle Allen drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth in the opener and Ryan Dickison hit a three-run homer and plated the go-ahead run with a single in the fifth in Cumberland’s doubleheader sweep of Culver-Stockton, 4-3 and 6-5, on Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Cumberland (13-6) and Culver-Stockton (3-12) finish the series Saturday with a single game at Noon. The Phoenix then head south to play three games during Spring Break starting Sunday against Bellevue University in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Cumberland scored twice in the fifth in the opener on an RBI double from Nick McGrew and a sacrifice fly by Mike Melendez to tie the game at three. Allen’s two-out single to right scored Hector Viera with the go-ahead run in the sixth, backing up CU starter Curtis Hoppe.
Hoppe (4-0) battled through seven innings to pick up the victory, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out five for his third straight complete game. The righthander retired the side in order just once, working around a pair of Cumberland errors as well.
Culver-Stockton starter Luis Vilchez (1-3) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings. He allowed one run on two hits in the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth and sixth.
The Wildcats scored three times in the second inning in the second game thanks to two singles, a walk and two errors. A suicide squeeze bunt by Marvin Campos plated one run and Brandon Cotter’s grounder up the middle scored another as well as a throwing error by Allen.
Dickison’s three-run homer in the third, his third of the season, put the Phoenix ahead, 5-3, but Culver-Stockton tied the game in the fifth on a two-run single from Kevin Cali.
Mike Melendez led off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the rightfield line and pinch-runner Brian Conn scored on Dickison’s single to right for a 6-5 lead.
Cumberland’s Stephen Fischer (5-0) picked up the win with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one hit with one walk and one strikeout. CU starter Joshua Mollett gave up five runs, three earned, on three hits with three walks. Two walks by Mollett set-up the tying single from Cali and chased the righthander from the game.
Gabe Lares and Dickison each collected two hits and Dickison drove in four runs in the contest.
Nathan Halliday (1-3), the second of three CSC hurlers, took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in four innings.
Cumberland got on the board first in the opener with a single run in the second inning, which started with a leadoff walk to Melendez. Dickison followed with a single, putting runners on the corners, and Melendez scored on an error by CSC second baseman Jordan Vazquez on a grounder off the bat of Richard Carter.
The Wildcats took the lead in the third when Cotter reached on a bunt single down the third base line and Robin Felix walked. Cotter was thrown out trying to steal third before an RBI double to leftcenter from Jake Potts. Cali then reached on a throwing error by McGrew, allowing Potts to score on the play for a 2-1 CSC edge.
In the fifth Pott led off with a single and Cali moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. Franklin Rojas followed with an RBI single to right for a 3-1 Culver-Stockton lead, though the Wildcats ran themselves out of the inning when Cali was picked off at third and Alonzo Ruz was thrown out trying to steal third.
Cumberland knotted the game in the bottom of the inning, with one-out singles from Lares and Josh Croft starting the rally. McGrew’s double down the leftfield line plated Lares and Croft came across on a sacrifice fly from Melendez, tying the game at three.
In the sixth Mitch Langer singled with one out but was forced out at second on Viera’s groundout. Viera stole second and scored the winning run on Allen’s single to right.
Lares led off the second game with a double to rightcenter, went to third on a groundout by Viera and scored on a balk.
Cumberland’s defense came undone in the second, allowing the Wildcats to score three times.
Rojas drew a leadoff walk and Ruz followed with a single to rightcenter, putting runners on the corners. Ruz stole second and the throw from Allen got away, allowing pinch-runner Danny Restrepo to score.
Derek Ratterman’s grounder to second moved Ruz to third and Vazquez grounded to third, but the throw to first from Ryan Simmons was low, putting runners on the corners. Campos’ very nice bunt past the pitcher scored Ruz and he would have reached without a nice play from second baseman Viera. Cotter’s slow grounder up the middle just got into the outfield, plating Vazquez for a 3-1 CSC advantage.
In the bottom of the second CU’s Tyler Yorko walked and moved to second on Marcel Marte’s second balk of the game. Simmons also walked and with two outs Lares grounded up the middle. The flip from Campos at shortstop was wild and Yorko never stopped coming around third, scoring to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Viera and McGrew both singled to start the third and two batters later Simmons lined an 0-1 pitch over the wall in rightcenter for a three-run homer and a 5-3 Phoenix lead.
Cotter and Felix both walked to start the Culver-Stockton fifth inning and Pott’s sac bunt put both runners in scoring position and ended the day for Mollett. Cali’s single to rightcenter against Fischer plated both runners, knotting the game at five.
After allowing the tying single, Fischer retired six straight batters before a one-out walk in the seventh, but he induced a 5-4-3 from Pott to end the contest.
