Errors costly in 8-6 loss at ERAU

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Stephen Fischer tossed six strong innings and Nick McGrew collected three hits and two RBIs, but Embry-Riddle scored all eight runs in its final three at-bats to post an 8-6 victory over Cumberland in baseball action Monday night in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Cumberland finishes its Florida swing with a 10:30 a.m. Central Time contest against Keiser University on Tuesday before returning home this weekend to open Mid-South Conference play against Shawnee State.

Josh Croft’s solo homer in the first and a sacrifice fly in the fifth by Gabe Lares gave the Phoenix a 2-0 edge, but the Eagles scored twice in the sixth on RBI singles from Liam Goodall and Enderson Velasquez, knotting the game at two.

Cumberland responded with three runs in the seventh to retake the lead, with Lares, Ryan Simmons and McGrew each driving in runs for a 5-2 CU advantage. That lead didn’t last long, as Embry-Riddle plated five runs in the bottom of the inning and one more in the eighth.

McGrew’s RBI double in the ninth scored Lares, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Ryan Dickison flied out to end the contest.

Fischer allowed one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts in six innings and was in line for his fifth victory of the season. Sean Cruz (0-2) suffered the loss, giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits in one-third of an inning.

ERAU starter Troy Baan also pitched well, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings. Reliever Kyle Miller gave up two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning, but Joey Swinarski (2-2) pitched the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win, allowing two runs on six hits.

Lares went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the leadoff spot for Cumberland, while Croft, Richard Carter and Kyle Allen each collected two hits for CU, which pounded out 14 hits in the loss.

Tobias Moreno, Kyle Zirbes, Matt Jacobs, Swinarski and Goodall each posted two hits for the Eagles and Joshua Garcia and Swinarski also drove in two runs apiece.

Croft’s solo homer to right with two outs in the first gave Cumberland an early 1-0 lead.

Fischer worked around a double by Zirbes and a walk to Jonathan Camp in the first and then singles from Swinarski and Ryan Maxon in the second. He retired nine of the next 11 batters for the Eagles and his teammates gave him another run to work with in the fifth.

Naab allowed singles to Croft and McGrew in the fourth before the Phoenix broke through again in the fifth, with Mitch Langer leading off the inning with a single through the left side and a stolen base. Allen’s one-out single put runners on the corners before the sac fly by Lares made it 2-0 for the visitors.

Camp reached on an error by Langer at first base to start the sixth for ERAU and ended up at second on the play. Goodall followed with an RBI single up the middle and stole second to get into scoring position. Velasquez also singled, scoring Goodall to tie the game at two, but a 4-6-3 doubleplay and another groundout got Fischer out of the inning without further damage.

In the seventh Carter doubled to rightcenter and Allen singled to the left side with one out, setting up an RBI single from Lares. Simmons also singled, plating Allen, and with two outs McGrew’s single through the left side scored Lares for a 5-2 Cumberland advantage.

Embry-Riddle answered back in the bottom of the inning, starting with singles from Moreno and Zirbes. Garcia’s base hit scored a pair and suddenly the lead was down to 5-4 and there was still no one out in the frame.

Cruz struck out Camp but then a single by Goodall ended his outing after just five batters. The runners moved up on a wild pitch but Garcia was tagged out at home on a grounder to short by Velasquez. Another error by the Phoenix, this one by third baseman Simmons, allowed Goodall to score and tie the game and Swinarski followed with a two-run single to left for a 7-5 ERAU lead.

The home team added an insurance run in the eighth when Moreno led off with a double, stole third and scored on a sac fly by Zirbes.

Lares started the ninth for Cumberland with a single up the middle and he scored on McGrew’s two-out double to leftcenter before the fly out by Dickison to end the game.
