Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Lindsey Wilson broke open a tie game with five runs in the sixth in the opener and the Blue Raiders limited Cumberland to just seven hits in each game in sweeping the Phoenix, 8-2 and 6-2, in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Egnew Park in Columbia, Ky.
Nick McGrew and Kyle Allen each collected two hits and Allen and Josh Croft drove in runs for Cumberland (25-19, 8-7 Mid-South) in the first contest, but a solo homer from Edgar Lebron and RBI singles by Jan Carlos Ortiz and Alex Salcedo along with a throwing error by Mike Melendez that allowed two runs to come across were part of LWC’s five-run sixth inning.
That was more than enough for Aaron Doughty (4-4), who allowed one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. He retired 10 straight batters in the middle innings and the Phoenix had just two baserunners in an inning against him only three times.
Melendez (3-5) suffered the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He set down seven in a row before running into trouble in the fifth, starting with Lebron’s homer.
Melendez collected two hits and he and McGrew each drove in a run in the second contest, but Cumberland was held scoreless after the first inning. The Blue Raiders scored three times in the fourth on RBI singles from Salcedo, Jayden Jackson and Lebron. LWC added two more runs in the sixth on RBI base hits by Brandon Munoz and Aaron Ashton.
Tyler Russell (5-2) worked five innings for the victory, allowing two runs on four hits in the first inning and then giving up three singles and no other baserunners the rest of the way. Sam Ross tossed the final two frames, walking one and striking out two for his first save.
Stephen Fischer (7-2) took the loss for CU, allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
Lindsey Wilson (28-16, 9-6) scored first in the opener, with Lebron doubling to rightcenter with two outs in the third and scoring on a single up the middle by Munoz.
Cumberland tied the game in the fourth after a leadoff double by McGrew and a single to the left side by Melendez. Gabe Lares bunted the runners to second and third and Croft’s groundout knotted the contest at one.
Lebron homered to left with one out in the sixth, giving LWC the lead for good. Munoz then singled and Ashton and Austin Atwell both walked, loading the bases. Ortiz’s infield single plated a run and Miguez Reyes bounced to the mound, but Melendez’s throw to the plate sailed over Allen’s head and to the backstop, allowing two runs to come across.
Salcedo’s ground ball to the right side scored Ortiz, extending the lead for the Blue Raiders to 6-1.
Tyler Yorko bunted his way on with two outs in the seventh and went to second when the throw got away. Allen then singled down the leftfield line, plating Yorko, but that was all that CU could manage offensively in the contest.
Lindsey Wilson added two more runs in the bottom of the inning, starting when Jackson reached on an error. Pinch-runner Caleb Ratzman went to second on a passed ball and Lebron bunted in front of the plate, but Allen’s throw to first sailed high, allowing a run to score. Three batters later Atwell singled down the leftfield line, driving in the final run of the game.
The Phoenix started quickly in the second contest, with Ryan Dickison doubling to center with two outs before an RBI single up the middle by McGrew. He took second on the throw and came across on Melendez’s single through the right side for a quick 2-0 edge.
Lebron walked to leadoff the bottom of the inning for LWC and stole second, taking third on an errant throw. Ashton’s one-out single through the left side made it a 2-1 contest.
The Blue Raiders took control of the game in the fourth when Ortiz led off with a triple down the rightfield line. He scored on Salcedo’s single up the middle, tying the game at two.
Ryan Harper’s sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second and Jackson’s single to left plated the go-ahead run. Ratzman’s bunt pushed the runner to second as well and Jackson Reyes came across on Lebron’s two-out single through the left side for a 4-2 LWC advantage.
In the sixth Jackson walked with one out and Ratzman was hit before a Lebron single loaded the bases. Singles from Munoz and Ashton drove in runs for a 6-2 Blue Raider lead.
Cumberland hosts Bethel University on Monday, with the game time moved up an hour to 1 p.m. to try and beat the rain at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
