Gabe Lares posted three of CU’s five hits in the loss, including a double.

CU starter Mike Melendez (3-6) took the loss, giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits with five walks and a career-best 11 strikeouts in eight innings.

Melendez singled home a run and Yorko followed with a two-run double in the first inning of the second game. The Phoenix (27-23, 9-9 Mid-South) added two more runs in the sixth on Yorko’s RBI double and a run-scoring single by Ryan Simmons.

Fischer (8-2) did the rest for CU, giving up no walks with three strikeouts in his best start in a month.

Georgetown started the day quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning of the opener, as Robert Longtree led off with a single and Meadows walked. Hector Marmol’s groundout moved the runners to second and third and with two outs, Nicholas Lugo struck out but reached first on a wild pitch.

Longtree also scored on the play and Meadows came across when the Tigers executed the double steal.

Cumberland cut into the deficit in the third when Kyle Allen walked and Lares followed with a double down the leftfield line, putting runners on second and third. Ryan Dickison’s groundout plated pinch-runner Bo Saunders. After the Lares double, Syrett retired 18 of the next 20 batters he faced, including 11 of the last 12.

Georgetown answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Trey Gross led off with a double and Longtree followed with a single. Meadows then singled to push the Tigers lead to 3-1.

Jalen Poindexter started the Georgetown fourth with a double and Kyle Jackson moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt. With two out Gross walked and the run came across on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Phoenix made it a two-run game in the fifth when Yorko tripled to center to start the frame and scored on a passed ball.

The Tigers answered again in the bottom of the inning, with Marmol drawing a walk with one out and Sam Medina reaching on a bunt. A fielder’s choice moved the runner to third and he came across on a passed ball for a 5-2 advantage.

Cumberland got on the board first in the second game, with everything starting with two outs in the first.

Dickison walked and Nick McGrew was hit before an RBI single to leftcenter by Melendez. Yorko followed with a two-run double to leftcenter, as well, and CU had a 3-0 lead after a half inning.

The Tigers picked up a run in the third when Emanuel Rosario tripled down the rightfield line to leadoff and Longtree reached on a bunt single, scoring the run to make it 3-1 Cumberland.

The Phoenix expanded the lead in the fifth, with Melendez drawing a leadoff walk before an RBI double down the leftfield line by Yorko. That ended the day for Georgetown starter Joe Fernandez (4-4), who allowed five runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in five-plus innings.

A one-out single to center by Ryan Simmons pushed the CU advantage to 5-1.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning, though, starting with a single by Marmol and a double from Medina. Pinch-hitter Jovan Hernandez’s groundout scored one run and a sacrifice fly by Gross cut the deficit to 5-3, but Fischer retired the side in order in the seventh to finish off the victory.
