Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Ryan Dickison’s two-run double in the ninth tied the game and Jarrett Plunkett ended it with a two-run walk-off homer in the 11th for a 5-3 victory in the opener for Cumberland, who won the second game as well, 9-5, to sweep the doubleheader over the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday in baseball action at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Cumberland (23-16, 7-5 Mid-South) swept the series and has won six straight and seven of its last nine games overall since being swept at home by the University of Pikeville two weeks ago.
The Phoenix trailed 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth in the first game before a single by Nick McGrew and a walk to Hector Viera. Dickison then delivered a two-run double to rightcenter, tying the contest and sending it into extra inning.
Kyle Allen drew a leadoff walk in the 11th and pinch-runner Taylor Dorsey advanced to third after a failed pickoff attempt. Plunkett deposited the first pitch from UC reliever Jeff Rivera over the wall in left field, his fourth home run of the year, giving CU the dramatic 5-3 win.
Stephen Fischer (7-1) tossed six innings of relief for the victory, allowing an unearned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. CU starter Mike Melendez went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits but with five walks and four strikeouts.
Cumberlands starter T.J. Campbell kept getting in-and-out of jams all game long before running into trouble in the ninth. He allowed 13 hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in 8.2 innings, stranding nine baserunners, including one in every inning but the seventh, but got no decision after Dickison’s two-run double ended his day.
Rivera suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit with two strikeouts in 1.1-plus innings.
Plunkett finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the game and also had an assist on a play at the plate that kept the Patriots from adding a second insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Dickison, Viera, Gabe Lares and Mitch Langer each collected two hits in the victory for CU.
Dickison added three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored in the second contest, with Cumberland scoring twice in the first and second innings and adding four runs in the fourth to pull away and complete the sweep.
Lares collected three hits as well, Plunkett went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Josh Croft recorded two hits.
Curtis Hoppe (6-2) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings to get the win, walking four and striking out four. Joshua Mollett picked up his second save of the year with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, walking one and striking out two.
Stone Osborne singled with one out in the first inning of the opener, one of his three hits in the contest, and Chase Schmittou was hit before a walk to Jose Alonzo loaded the bases. With two outs Zach McRoberts also drew a free pass, forcing in a run for an early UC advantage.
Lares and Langer started the CU second with singles and Allen’s sacrifice bunt pushed the runners to second and third. Plunkett’s single through the left side tied the game at one, but McGrew lined into a doubleplay to end the inning.
Melendez worked out of a jam in the third after a leadoff single by Osborne and a walk to Schmittou, but the lefthander could not do the same in the fifth.
Osborne started the inning with a single and Schmittou followed with a double before an RBI groundout by Alonzo. Melendez got a groundout and a fielder’s choice to keep the damage to one run.
In the ninth Reed Spata drew a leadoff walk for the Patriots but was forced out at second on Osborne’s bunt. Schmittou and Alonzo both singled, but Osborne was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Alonzo’s base hit. Landon Byron’s single to right plated Schmittou with an insurance run for the visitors for a 3-1 advantage, setting up the ninth-inning drama.
Cumberland scored twice in the first inning of the second game, with Viera drawing a leadoff walk and scoring on Dickison’s double. Two batters later Croft doubled as well, giving CU a 2-0 edge after an inning.
The Cumberlands answered with three runs in the second inning, starting with singles from Alonzo and Byron. With one out Jesse Reyes walked, loading the bases, and one run came across on Robbie Stroub’s infield hit. Spata doubled to short center off the glove of a diving Lares, plating two runs for a 3-2 UC advantage.
The Phoenix came right back in the bottom half of the frame, with Ryan Simmons drawing a leadoff walk and moving to second on Allen’s sac bunt. Plunkett beat out an infield single and the throw got away down the line, allowing Simmons to score on the play. Two batters later Viera reached on an error, allowing Plunkett to come across for a 4-3 lead.
Plunkett’s leadoff double and an RBI single by McGrew started the four-run fourth inning for CU. Viera reached on a bunt single and Dickison drove home both runs with his team-leading fourth triple of the season. Melendez walked and Croft bounced into a 6-4-3 doubleplay, but Dickison scored on the play for an 8-3 advantage.
The Cumberlands cut into the deficit in the fifth, starting with singles from Osborne and Schmittou. With two outs McRoberts walked, loading the bases, and Reyes followed with a two-run single, making it an 8-5 game.
In the sixth Spata walked and Osborne was hit with one out, ending the day for Hoppe, but Mollett got a lineout and a groundout to end the threat.
Cumberland added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Dickison singled and Melendez walked with one out. With two outs Lares singled to right, plating Dickison with the final run of the contest.
Cumberland plays at Bethel University on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and hosts top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday, also at 2 p.m.
