LEBANON, Tenn. – Jonas Arcalean converted a penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime, giving Martin Methodist a 4-3 victory over Cumberland in men’s soccer action Tuesday night in Pulaski, Tenn.
Cumberland (0-2-2) held the lead twice in the first half thanks to goals by Daniel Williams and Tyler Watson, but Arcalean’s scored in the 59th minute evened the match at three. Neither team could find the back of the net for almost 50 minutes until CU’s Jonathan Walderstrom earned his second yellow card of the match in the 108th minute, giving the RedHawks a PK.
Arcalean netted his third goal of the match for the Martin Methodist (2-4-0) victory.
Williams put the Phoenix ahead early, finishing a pass from Martin Walsh in the eighth minute for an early lead, but the RedHawks evened the match in the 13th minute on a goal from Alex Kleczkowski on an assist by Mario Lopez.
Martin Methodist scored again less than two minutes later, this one from Arcalean assisted by Miguel Tizapa. Cumberland squared the match again in the 25th minute on an unassisted goal by Julian Lucumi.
The Phoenix regained the lead before the half on an unassisted goal from Watson. Cumberland outshot the RedHawks, 9-4, in the period but MMC scored twice on their four shots.
Arcalean tied the match for the third time in the 59th minute, another Arcalean score, and Martin Methodist controlled possession more in the second half, outshooting the Phoenix, 4-2, over the final half hour.
Cumberland is back at home this Friday, taking on Menlo College at 2 p.m. at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
