Phoenix take two from No. 22 UNOH to open series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland opens up the weekend series with two come from behind wins to defeat No. 22 University of Northwestern Ohio 11-3 and 7-6.

Cumberland (4-3-1) had big days from Cole Turney and Xavier Torres at the plate, while Cumberland’s bullpen did fantastic work, giving up one run in over seven innings of work in both games.

Turney played the hero in game two, cranking two three-run homers including a go-ahead three run shot to take the lead in the fifth. He finished 4-for-6 on the day with eight RBI. Torres went 6-for-8 with a home run and three RBI.

The first game of the doubleheader started as a complete pitcher’s duel. Both starters were dealing and exited the game with no decisions. Reid Madariaga got the start for Cumberland and went 5.1 innings striking out three giving up seven hits and three runs. Ronaldo Heredia-Bustos picked up the start for the Racers and had a no-hitter going into the fifth before Torres broke it up with a solo shot. Tied at 1-1, Chewy Sanders hit a two-run home run to right-center to give the Phoenix a 3-1 lead and end Heredia-Bustos day.

The Racers pushed across two in the sixth to draw the end for Madariaga, but in the bottom-half of the sixth, Cumberland exploded for eight runs to take command of the game.

Torres started the scoring with an RBI-single to right before Brandon Boxer scored on a wild pitch while advancing runners to second and third. Turney smoked a single up the middle to push in two more for a 7-3 lead. Cumberland manufactured Turney to third and he came in on a sacrifice fly from Santrel Farmer. Dee Triplett followed that with a three-run homer to left field for the 11-3 lead where the score remained.

In game two, Phoenix starter Reece Milam got roughed up in the first 1.1 ending his day quickly after giving up five runs on six hits. Kaleb Vaughn entered and threw the next 3.2 only giving up one run on a solo home run.

The Phoenix got back in the game in the third inning. Again it was Torres to set the table hitting an RBI single to put runners on first and second for Turney. Turney blasted his first three run home run over dead-center field to make it a 5-4 game.

Josue Ortiz posted a solo homer in the fifth to push it back to a two run game at 6-4. In the bottom half, Juan Moreno was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Torres roped a single in the first pitch of the at-bat to set up Turney’s second three-run homer of the game.

Dillon Bland recorded the final six outs of the game to pick up Cumberland’s first save of the season.

These same two teams will play tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m. with two seven inning games.
