Box Score LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball out slugs IU South Bend in a offensive frenzy with 40 runs scored and eight home runs, 23-17.
Cumberland (10-4-1) picks up win No. 10 on the season and extends their win streak to four and eight of the last nine. The Phoenix cranked four homers and pounded out 17 hits in the win.
The Phoenix took control of the game in the eighth inning when Cole Turney hit a pinch-hit go-ahead grand slam to give CU the lead for good.
Chewy Sanders went 3-for-5 with 4 runs scored, and 5 RBIs with a home run and two doubles. Tim Holyk Holyk went 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs, and a home run. Dee Triplett went 2-for-2 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and 2 walks. Jordan Coffey went 2-for-5 with his first career home run.
The Phoenix controlled the bases in the game stealing 13 bases. Juan Moreno and Xavier Torres each stole three bases while Sanders and Santrel Farmer swiped two apiece.
Kaleb Vaughn ended up getting the win on the mound, throwing the final two frames giving up two runs and striking out three. Cumberland ran out five arms in the game.
The game began with IU South Bend taking an early lead in the 1st inning, with Logan Smith hitting a leadoff home run to right field to give them a 1-0 lead. However, CU quickly responded in their half of the inning, with Dee Triplett hitting a double to right center to bring in Xavier Torres home, tying the game at 1-1. Tim Holyk then hit a single to left field, bringing in Triplett and Juan Moreno's single up the middle scored two more runs, giving CU a 4-1 lead after the first inning.
In the 3rd inning, IUSB rallied with Brett Sikorski hitting a three run home run to right center to tie the game at 4-4. However, CU quickly regained the lead in their half of the inning, with Sanders hitting a two-run blast to left field giving the Phoenix a 6-4 lead.
IUSB came back strong in the 4th inning, with Kole Miller hitting a two run homer to center field to tie the game. Logan Smith's single up the middle brought in Coby Campbell to give IUSB a 7-6 lead, and Brenden Bell followed with a single up the middle to extend their lead to 8-6. Owen Benson hit single up the middle then scored two more runs, making the score 10-6 for six runs in the inning.
However, CU responded once again in their half of the inning, with Jordan Coffey leading off the inning with a home run to right center. Sanders then hit a single two-RBI single to right field, to make it a one-run game. Triplett scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Tim Holyk's home run to right field brought in two more runs for CU, giving them a 12-10 lead after the 4th inning.
In the 5th inning, Torres' single to shortstop brought in Santrel Farmer to extend CU's lead to 13-10. Torres then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher, making it 14-10. In the 6th inning, CU scored again when Jacob Dukart scored on a passed ball, giving them a 15-10 lead.
IUSB then mounted a comeback in the 7th inning, after loading the bases Smith was hit by a pitch to score a run followed by a bases loaded walkl, making it 15-12. Bedell grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in another run and Kaleb Farnham's two-RBI single to center field brought in two more runs to tie the game at 15-15.
In the 8th inning, the Titan's retook the lead after Smith's single to center to give IUSB a 16-15 lead.
The Phoenix answered with a huge eighth inning starting with Turney's pinch-hit grand slam to give CU the lead. Cumberland tacked on four more runs in the inning as Triplett's doubled home a run, Sanders' singled in Triplett, Sanders came in on a doubleplay, and then Holyk scored on a wild pitch a 23-16 lead. The Titans would get one in the ninth on Sikorski's second homer of the day, but that was all they could put together.
Cumberland will play tomorrow at home against Bryan College at 1:00 p.m.
