Men's Tennis Takes Narrow Loss to no. 11 Knights in Macon

Macon, Ga. - - The Cumberland men's tennis team took on the no. 11 ranked Middle Georgia State Knights, the first of many ranked opponents they'll face this weekend. The Phoenix took it to the brink, but fell 4-3.

Julian Parada and Vitor Ferriera kicked off the match at no. 1 singles and unusually struggled, unable to hold their serve a single time, falling 6-0. German Suarez and Daniel Wessels nearly did the complete opposite at the second singles spot, dropping just a single game in a 6-1 winning effort.

The final spot saw Cumberland take the doubles point, Dan Slapnik Trost and Adrijan Hrzic managed a 6-3 rout of the Knights, leading 1-0 early.

The Phoenix's top spots again continued to struggle, losing both one and two singles in straight sets. Daniel Wessels held both of his first two service games to start his singles match but was unable to keep his momentum, falling 6-2 in both sets.

Vitor Ferreira challenged at the second spot, losing both sets by a two game margin, 7-5, 6-4. At the third spot the Phoenix finally found themselves another point, as Adrijan Hrzic won his match in a tense third set tiebreak, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Julian Parada was able to grab an early lead in both sets of his no. 4 singles match, but couldn't hold off the efforts of his opponent for the length of the match, losing 6-4, 6-4.

CU grabbed their last point of the match at no. 5, where Paul Daniel Meyer took the first set in a tight dual, but pulled away in the second, winning 7-5, 6-2.

German Suarez was unable to pull out the final point for the Phoenix, but had a great effort at the final singles spot, dropping his match 6-3, 6-4.

Cumberland will play two matches tomorrow, first against (RV) Ave Maria University at 9:30 AM and no. 4 Southeastern at 1:30 PM.
