Men's Tennis Settles for Tie with no. 9 Coastal Georgia

Macon, Ga. - - The Cumberland men's tennis team took on the no. 9 team in the NAIA, Coastal Georgia, in their final match of a long weekend of games.

Doubles was as filled with drama as ever, seeing all three matches come down to just a two game gap. At the top position Vitor Ferreira and German Suarez went down three games to none quickly, but regrouped and made it in a close match in the end, losing 6-4.

The no. 2 spot was juxtaposed against the first, as Dan Slapnik Trost and Adrijan Hrzic went out to a 4-0 lead, and had to stay sharp, taking their set 6-4. Paul Daniel Meyer and Elisey Kalashikov went back and forth with their opponents at the final spot, but the Mariners pulled away to take the doubles point, 7-5.

Singles action brought all the drama, as the Phoenix and Mariners vied for momentum with every match. Dan Slapnik Trost fell first, dropping no. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2, but Vitor Ferreira grabbed a point right back at the top spot, winning 6-1, 6-4.

Paul Daniel Meyer reigned over the third spot, winning in a full three set match, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The final win for the Phoenix came at no. 6, where German Suarez dispatched his opponent 6-4, 6-4. Elisey Kalashikov fought hard to come back at the fourth spot, but could not find a way past Coastal, falling 6-2, 6-4.

No. 2 singles is what the match ultimately came down to, as Adrijan Hrzic battled it out for nearly three hours before his match, and the match as a whole, was abandoned. Dropping the first set 6-4, Hrzic rallied in the second to grab the momentum, winning 6-2. The third set was played to a 5-5 stalemate, but disagreements between the two teams led to the match being called off as a whole, ending in a 3-3 tie.

The Phoenix will play in their home and conference opener this Thursday, February 29th, against Georgetown College.
