Men's Tennis Sweep Georgetown To Start MSC Action

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The men's tennis team opened their conference season this afternoon with a big victory over rivals, Georgetown College.

Doubles was a sweep across the board, seeing the Tigers only manage to take seven total games from the Phoenix, the closest being a 6-4 victory for Cumberland at the number one spot. Vitor Ferreira and German Suarez went down early but were able to corral themselves to a nice win at the top spot.

Adrijan Hrzic and Dan Slapnik Trost played the fastest match of the evening, taking the second spot 6-1, in just 25 minutes total. The final spot was played out despite the clinch, as Elisey Kalashikov and Paul-Daniel Meyer gave the Phoenix the sweep.

Single action was much of the same for Cumberland, though the Tigers brought the fight for the latter half of the match. At the number one singles spot Ferreira had no easy win, taking the first set 6-3, but playing two tiebreaks his next two sets.

The match was actually the final to finish, seeing GC take the first tiebreak 7-5, but Ferreira was able to pull out the victory in the third set tiebreak, 11-9. Adrijan Hrzic had a more comfortable victory at the second position, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Playing one of his best matches of the season, Paul-Daniel Meyer was dialed in on court three, allowing his opponent to hold serve just once, winning 6-0, 6-1. With four points on the board already the Phoenix secured the victory, but still had three more matches to play.

Elisey Kalashikov grabbed a win at four singles, winning 6-3, 6-3, and just across from him on court five German Suarez won 6-4, 6-3. Completing the sweep at the six spot, Dan Slapnik-Trost won 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

Cumberland is slated to play this Saturday, March 2, against no. 17 Grace College, at 9 AM.
