Men's Tennis Fall 6-1 in Battle with Austin Peay

Clarksville, Tenn. - - The Cumberland men's tennis team challenged D1 opponent, Austin Peay, for the second time this season, falling 6-1 to the Governors.

Doubles was competitive, but the home side pulled away quickly to take the first point of the match. Both pairs at no. 1 and 2 doubles fell to the same scoreline, as Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira lost 6-3 at the top spot and German Suarez and Daniel Wessels dropped the second in the same manner.

Three doubles came down to the wire as Dan Slapnik Trost and Adrijan Hrzic took their opponents to a match tiebreak, but ran out of steam at the end, losing 7-6 (7-1).

Elisey Kalashikov took the single point for the Phoenix at the no. 5 singles spot, putting his foot on the pedal to win the first set 6-3, and did not let up at all, taking the second set 6-1. Both Adrijan Hrzic and Paul-Daniel Meyer had matches go to a full third set, though they would ultimately fall.

Hrzic broke his opponent's third service game in the opening set and held on to win 6-4, but his opponent did not allow the momentum to shift away for too long. The second singles spot went to the Governors, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Meyer also took an early lead with a commanding first set victory, 6-2, but Austin Peay again could not be held back for long. Tom Bolton had the edge over Meyer on the day, but the freshman took him to the brink, falling 6-4 and 7-5 in the following two sets.

Julian Parada had something of a marathon match at the number three spot, with two sets taking nearly two hours to be played. Peay took the first set 6-3, but Parada stormed back to take the second set to a tiebreak, where he was just short of a third set, losing 9-7 in the frame.

Vitor Ferreira continued to battle at the pole position in singles, dropping his first set 6-1. The Brazilian had a strong effort in the second set though, losing just 6-4 after dropping only a single service game.

German Suarez couldn't find his way into his match at the no. 6 spot, losing 6-1, 6-0.

Cumberland will be at it again on Thursday, getting back to conference action where they will travel to Mckenzie to face in-state rivals, Bethel. Play is set to begin at 1:00 PM.
