Men's Tennis Can't Find Way Past No. 17 Lancers

Lebanon, Tenn. - - After routing Georgetown at home earlier this week the Phoenix welcomed the Grace College Lancers to Lebanon, a matchup of two top-25 ranked heavyweights.

Cumberland jumped the Lancers early, taking the doubles point in under thirty minutes of action. Elisey Kalashikov and Paul-Daniel Meyer were the first pairing to win for the Phoenix, taking their set 6-2, while Vitor Ferreira and German Suarez took the top singles spot just minutes later, 6-3.

Adrijan Hrzic and Dan Slapnik Trost finished the proceedings for Cumberland, sweeping Grace with a 6-4 set score. Though the Phoenix took the first point from the Lancers, singles action was as competitive as can be, with three tiebreaks being played and two different matches going to a full third set.

Vitor Ferreira was at the no. 1 spot for the Phoenix and after an exhausting that ended with him dropping the tie break, 7-5, he ran out of steam and dropped the second set 6-0. At the second singles spot Adrijan Hrzic held his own but struggled to find a way through his opponents serve, falling 6-3, 6-4.

Not all was bad for the Phoenix though, as German Suarez took his no. 5 singles match in under an hour, winning 6-0, 6-2. Lacking momentum in the latter half of the match, Paul-Daniel Meyer dropped his first set 6-1, but rallied and was just short in the second, losing a tiebreak 7-4.

Elsewhere, Julian Parada and Dan Slapnik Trost found themselves in two hour marathon matches, playing full third sets. Slapnik Trost and his opponent split their first two sets, 6-4, 6-4, but the senior for the Phoenix found himself in the winners column with another 6-4 victory going his way.

The final match of the day to finish was the decider at no. three, as Parada dropped both of his sets in tiebreaks.

The Phoenix will wait until after Spring break to play again, where they will face off against Austin Peay on Tuesday, March 12th.
