Women's Tennis Push Campbellsville in 5-2 Loss

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team fell to the Campbellsville Tigers in their MSC conference matchup, falling 5-2.

Valentina Mendez and Kaede Hatano set the tone early in their match, winning 6-1 in the fastest set of the day. The following two matches at the No. 1 and 2 spots did not go the way of the Phoenix though, losing both sets in tight 7-5 games.

As the Tigers took the doubles point, the Phoenix had ground to make and it began at the top singles spot. Maria Arbelaez dropped her first set, but came back in the second and won 6-2 to force a third set, which she eventually fell to a 6-3 scoreline.

The no. 2 spot played similarly, as Valentina Mendez lost her first set but managed to win her second, in dominant fashion, 6-1. Mendez ran out of steam in the deciding set though, falling 6-1.

Cumberland still could not manage to find their way past the Tigers in the following two positions, seeing both Lara Zugasti and Kaede Hatano drop their matches. Hatano won her first set, ultimately falling though, she dropped the last two sets 6-3, 6-2; Zugasti would fall 6-2, 6-2.

The Phoenix did find some success at the lower spots in the lineup though with both Alexandra Leisibach and Madeleine Darud taking victories at four and five. Leisibach had to win in three sets, 6-5, 5-7, 6-2, while Darud won swiftly, 6-2, 6-1.

CU has some time off before finishing their home stretch, playing Lewis-Clark State College next Friday. The match is set to start at 10:00 AM.
