Women's Tennis Has Senior Day Spoiled by Lewis-Clark State

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team hosted Lewis-Clark State for their Senior Day festivities and the Warriors spoiled the Phoenix's day, winning 5-2.

Doubles had action on all courts but the point ultimately came down to the third spot. Kaede Hatano and Valentina Mendez took on the top spot and were competitive in a 2-6 loss.

At No. 2 doubles Lara Zugasti and Maria Arbelaez won their match with the same score flipped, taking the second spot 6-2. All the pressure fell onto Alexandra Leisibach and Madeleine Darud and they found a way to answer.

Falling behind as much as 4-1, the Phoenix pairing stepped up as their teammates finished their matches and came up to support them, winning 5 straight games to take the match 6-4.

Darud was the lone Cumberland player that was able to find major success in singles, winning No. 5 swiftly in two sets. The Phoenix freshman shut her opponent in the first set and never looked back, winning 6-0, 6-3.

Lara Zugasti was also able to make something happen, dropping her first set at No. 3, but came back to win the second in a nail-biter, 7-5. Her opponent regathered herself though and won the third set, finishing 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, in favor of LCS.

Elsewhere, Maria Arbelaez started slow and fought back in the second set, but it was too late as she dropped the pole spot, 2-6, 4-6. Valentina Mendez was sat just behind her in the No. 2 spot, falling 3-6, 4-6.

The last two spots to be played still did not favor the Phoenix, as both Kaede Hatano and Alexandra Leisibach both fell at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively. Hatano's score had just two games of difference in each set, 6-4, 7-5, while Leisibach ended 6-4, 6-3.

Cumberland will have one more home match this season as they face off against the University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks next Wednesday, April 3rd.
