Women's Tennis Drop Final Home Match of Season against Firehawks

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team took on former conference foes UT Southern Firehawks, but would fall 5-1 in their final home match of the season.

Valentina Mendez and Kaede Hatano have had a successful season playing doubles together and today they captured the lone victory in the doubles action for the Phoenix, winning 6-3. Every court played out to the same 6-3 result, Cumberland however was on the wrong end of the other two results, dropping #1 and #3.

Madeleine Darud again stood out playing singles, winning her match at the fifth singles spot, 6-3, 6-2. Other matches were tightly contested but went opposite the Phoenix, such as Maria Arbelaez who stormed back after losing the first set to force a third set tiebreak, but ultimately fell 3-6, 6-1, 4-10.

Kaede Hatano also had herself quite the match at No. 3 singles, taking her first set 6-2, losing the second 3-6, and going all the way to a full third set tiebreak, losing narrowly, 10-7. Both Valentina Mendez and Lara Zugasti struggled to find their way into their matches, losing 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-1, respectively.

The only other match that was unable to finish due to the weather was Alexandra Leisibach, who had dropped her first set in a tiebreak and was battling with her opponent in the second.

The Phoenix have two more contests this regular season, facing off against the University of the Cumberlands this weekend on the road. Their match is scheduled to begin at April 6th in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
