Strong team effort lands Women's XC Sixth at Great Lakes Challenge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - - Cumberland women's cross country put together another strong team showing Saturday morning, finishing sixth out of 30 teams in the White division at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge hosted by Aquinas College.

Sarah Wilkerson led the Phoenix once again with a time of 19:39.9, placing 19th overall in a field of close to 200 runners. The senior ran a composed race, maintaining position in the top 25 throughout and finishing as Cumberland's top runner for the fourth straight meet.

Jenna Towles wasn't far behind, clocking 19:43.9 to take 25th place, giving the Phoenix a strong 1-2 punch up front. Wendy Komane continued her solid fall with a 20:04.9 finish for 40th place, and Sami Parker crossed just two seconds later at 20:06.6 to take 43rd. Both contributed key points in the middle of the lineup.

Alexa Rumpf wrapped up her day with a strong race, taking 58th in 20:18.6, while Laykin Ellis was right on her heels at 65th with a time of 20:25.9. Channon Cundiff added depth in 69th (20:41.2), and Lilah Mohler rounded out the Phoenix competitors in 87th (20:56.5), giving the team a full, cohesive showing in a field of more than 270 runners.

Cornerstone captured the team title with 102 points, followed by Huntington (110) and Marian (113). Cumberland's sixth-place finish ranked first among Mid-South Conference programs in the race, beating out Campbellsville.

The Phoenix will now turn their attention to the Mid-South Conference Championships, set for November 7 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
