Women's Tennis Take 2-1 Record Out of Grizzly Invitational After OLLU Win

Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis Team took on the Saints from Our Lady of the Lake University in their final match of the Grizzly Invitational, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett.

The Saints were two players shy of a full lineup, meaning the Phoenix could make quick work of OLLU and they were able to do just that. Ending their matches at the same time, Emilia Nowak and Valentina Mendez won on court one, sealing the doubles point for Cumberland, 6-2.

On the second doubles court Kaede Hatano and Asya Tilsim Timur didn't fare as well though, falling 6-2. With the doubles point the match now sat at 3-0 already for the Phoenix, as courts five and six were forfeited by the short staffed Saints lineup.

Just needing a single victory for the win, Elina Sungatullina did that for Cumberland. The Russian took the first set by a score of 6-2, and although the Saints number one did her best to take it to a third set, Sungatullina won in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-2).

Before her win, OLLU was able to find a point in the match, taking a win over Asya Tilsim Timur on court three. After falling in doubles, the freshman struggled to find her footing in singles, losing 6-1, 6-0.

Elsewhere, Ame Van Eijk has herself in a strong position to win at the number two position, taking the first set 6-4, while leading the second set 5-3 and serving for the match. Lastly, on court four Valentina Mendez was in a battle in the third set, having won her first set, 6-3 ,and lost the second, 6-1.

Cumberland will play again this Friday, heading to Athens, Tennessee where they will square off with Tennessee Wesleyan.
