Parada Stars Again as Phoenix Get The Better of The Lancers

Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's Tennis Team finally had their chance to play on their home court this afternoon, taking on the no. 14 ranked Grace Lancers.

Despite dropping the top doubles spot, the Phoenix rebounded quickly to take the first point of the match. Gabriel Godoy and Vitor Ferreira partnered up to win 6-3 at the second spot while Paul-Daniel Meyer and Daniel Wessels both won with the same score at the third spot.

Hassan Ammar and Julian Parada did drop the top spot however, falling in a tiebreak 7-6 (8-6).

Playing a two hour marathon match, Daniel Wessels won his match on court one, though it took a real effort. Winning his first set 7-5, the South African was dispatched quickly in the second, 6-1, setting up for a big third set for the match.

Going back and forth for the first several games of the match, Wessels broke the Lancers serve and ran away with his win, 6-3.

The next two courts were won by the Lancers, taking points away from Paul-Daniel Meyer and Vitor Ferreira. First, Meyer dropped his first set with a 6-3 score, and Grace ran away with the momentum to win 6-1 in the second. Ferreira had a tiger contest despite his loss, falling in the first set by just one service break, 7-5, and again was bested in a tiebreak for the second set, 7-6 (7-2).

Getting back to winning ways, Julian Parada did like Julian Parada does and battled his way to a three set victory. The Colombian was on court for over two and a half hours, winning his first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (8-6), before dropping his second set 6-1. As the match came down to a third set, Parada was unmatched when it mattered most, winning 6-0.

Gabriel Godoy had the quickest match of the afternoon, taking the victory at five singles in straight sets. The Brazilian has been on fire as of late and won confidently today, 6-4, 6-3.

Falling at six singles, Hassan Ammar joined Wessels and Parada in terms of marathon matches. The freshman won his first set 6-4 and fell in the second set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3). Ultimately the Lancers found their third point of the match however, winning the third, 6-2.

Cumberland will be back in action next Wednesday as they take on the UT Southern Firehawks in Pulaski.
