Women's Tennis Dominant in 7-0 Sweep of Tigers in Georgetown

Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis Team took their fifth win in a row and second sweep in three games as they handled Georgetown on the road, 7-0.

In what turned out to be an end-to-end sweep of the Tigers, the Phoenix started off hot with three straight victories in doubles. Madeleine Darud and Valentina Mendez played at the top spot and won 6-2, while Kaede Hatano and Lara Zugasti secured the point for CU at three doubles.

Juanita Mendez and Emilia Nowak had a close contest that took nearly an hour on court two, as the Tigers went down 0-4 early but rallied back to make it 5-5, though the Phoenix pair pulled away in the end, 7-5.

Singles action was a continuation of doubles with the Phoenix not dropping a single set from courts one through six. Elina Sungatullina had the closest match of the afternoon in singles as the Russian won 6-4, 6-4 on court one.

Emilia Nowak found her groove early, dropping only one game in the first set before sweeping the second, winning 6-1, 6-0. The last match to see more than two games go the way of Georgetown was with Valentina Mendez who won 6-3, 6-3 at the third singles spot.

Ame Van Eijk's opponent broke her serve and held her own serve once in the first set, but the Dutch freshman didn't allow anything else to go the way of the Tiger on court four, winning 6-2, 6-0.

Kaede Hatano then did one better than Van Eijk, routing the first set 6-0 and then following that up with a 6-1 set victory in the second.

Asya Tilsim Timur played on the final court of singles action but won her match the quickest. The Turk did not drop a single game in singles as she won 6-0, 6-0, securing a match sweep for Cumberland.

CU will play again tomorrow as they welcome in the current no. 3 ranked team in the country, Lindsey Wilson College.
