3-Seed Cumberland Cruises Past Georgetown in MSC Quarterfinals

Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--Third-seeded Cumberland men's tennis opened the Mid-South Conference Tournament with a dominant 4-0 sweep of sixth-seeded Georgetown in quarterfinal action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Phoenix (13-8) took early control in doubles play, securing the point with wins on courts one and two. Vitor Ferreira and Julian Parada got things rolling with a 6-2 victory over Wiliam Barnes and Leo Schirmer at the top spot. Shortly after, the Phoenix clinched the doubles point as Gabriel Godoy and Elisey Kalashnikov edged out Chase Hechemy and Matthew Smith, 6-4, on court two. Court three went unfinished with Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer leading 5-4.

In singles action, Cumberland wasted no time putting points on the board. Godoy won on court five, as he beat Hechemy 6-0, 6-1 in less than an hour Shortly after, Meyer defeated Alexander Straiger 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot to push the lead to 3-0.

The clincher came from Ferreira as he bested Schirmer on court two 7-5, 6-2.

The remaining matches on courts one, three, and six were left unfinished with Cumberland leading in each.

With the win, Cumberland advances to the MSC Semifinals where they will face second-seeded Cumberlands tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.

This will be the third time the Patriots and Phoenix have met this season with each team winning one time. Cumberland beat the Patriots 5-2 in a neutral site match in February and the Patriots beat the Phoenix at home 4-1 earlier this month. This match will also be a rematch from last season's Mid-South Conference Championship.
