LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland goalkeeper
Pau Gelabert was named the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week this morning.
Gelabert helped the Phoenix remain unbeaten across the two-match stretch, making seven saves while allowing just two goals against then No. 6 Georgia Gwinnett before recording a clean sheet against Lindsey Wilson.
Against Georgia Gwinnett, Gelabert made four saves on six shots on goal as Cumberland picked up a 4-2 road victory. The Phoenix led 2-0 at halftime before Georgia Gwinnett pulled level in the second half, but Cumberland answered with two late goals to secure the win.Â
He followed that performance with another strong showing against No. 18 Lindsey Wilson, in a scoreless draw at Lindsey Donnell Stadium. Gelabert recorded three saves, including stops in the 78th and 87th minutes, to preserve the clean sheet against the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson managed just five shots and three shots on goal in the match.
The junior goalkeeper has now played a key role in Cumberland's unbeaten start to the season, helping the Phoenix maintain a 9-0-3 record through 12 matches.
This is Gelabert's first Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season.
The Phoenix are back in action away at the University of the Cumberlands Thursday evening.
