Phoenix Tennis Undefeated Against Christian Brothers in Memphis

Box Score 1 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - - The Cumberland men's and women's tennis teams both picked up wins against DII opponents, Christian Brothers this afternoon, 5-2 and 6-1, respectively.

Winning by the bigger margin the women's tennis team won 6-1, picking up an early doubles point. Valentina and Juanita Mendez won 6-4 at the top spot while Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud fell at the next spot, 6-4. The deciding point would be handed to the Phoenix however, as the Bucs didn't have enough players to field a third doubles team.

Singles action granted the Phoenix two free points as well, taking forfeit victories on courts five and six. It wasn't all forfeits however, as Maria Arbelaez won 6-0, 3-0 at the second singles spot, followed up by wins from Valentina Mendez and Elina Sungatullina.

The Colombian won in a tiebreak, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, while the Russian won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. Asya Tilsim Timur was unable to complete the singles sweep though, falling at one singles in a tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 5-10.

Cumberland's men also started quickly with an early point in doubles to swing the momentum to the Phoenix. Arne Sohmer and Arthur Fernandes won 6-3 in the top spot, followed up by Mateus Mori and Mohamed Bouhlel taking the third spot, 6-1.

Matheus Guarnieri and Carlos Morillas dropped their match in the middle spot, 6-4.

Bouhlel picked up a quick win at the number two singles spot as his opponent forfeited before the conclusion of the first set. Arthur Fernandes manned the ship at three singles and won in a tiebreak, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Arne Sohmer carried his momentum over from doubles to win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Mateus Mori wrapped up the 5-2 win for the Phoenix with another tiebreak victory like Fernandes, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.

Carlos Morrilas and Matheus Guarnieri both dropped their matches at one and five singles. Morillas fell 6-1, 6-2, while Guarnieri lost 6-3, 6-2.

Cumberland will take on Blue Mountain Christian tomorrow afternoon.
