Nwoye Anchors Phoenix Defense, Earns Weekly Honors

LEBANON, Tenn.--Freshman forward Michael Nwoye has been Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week. 

The Antioch, Tenn. native averaged 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game while helping the Phoenix split a pair of games, including a thrilling 103-94 double overtime victory over Bethel. Nwoye totaled 19 rebounds, seven blocks, and three steals across the week.

In Cumberland's marathon win over Bethel, he pulled down 13 rebounds, swatted five shots, and recorded three steals while logging 48 minutes in the double overtime battle. 

Earlier in the week at Freed-Hardeman, Nwoye posted nine points and six rebounds while blocking two shots in 36 minutes of action. For the week, he shot an efficient 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field and averaged 12.0 points per game to complement his defensive production.

This is Nwoye's second Mid-South Conference Player of the Week of the season and of his career. This is first Defensive Player of the Week.
