No. 19 Phoenix Women's Tennis Drop MSC Battle to No. 2 Blue Raiders

Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team managed to take a point off of the No. 2 ranked Blue Raiders, though Lindey Wilson took the ultimate victory, 6-1.

Juanita Mendez and Valentina Mendez slotted in at No. 1 doubles and fought valiantly against a top-ranked doubles team in the country, losing 6-3. Elina Sungatullina and Maria Arbelaez were even closer, losing narrowly at 6-4, while Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud were unable to get their footing in the match, falling 6-0 on court three.

The lone point of the match for the Phoenix came in a straight sets win on court three, seeing Maria Arbelaez topple her opponent 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. That effort saw the Colombian topple a top-50 opponent, marking her biggest individual win of the season.

After that point the Blue Raiders took control, taking a win over Asya Tilsim Timur on court one, 6-3, 6-4. Valentina Mendez did double-duty playing at the one doubles spot and two singles spots, though she fell 6-0, 6-2 on court two.

Elina Sungatullina held on strong in both sets but was just shy playing at No. 4, losing 6-4, 6-4. Madeleine Darud and Ame Van Eijk then closed out the day with steady performances, 6-1, 6-2 for the former and 6-3, 6-4 for the latter.

Cumberland will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on the Georgetown Tigers.
