LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball hits the road for a critical Mid-South Conference series against Bethel this weekend, with a doubleheader set for Friday at 3:00 p.m. and the series finale moved to one game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. due to forecasted weather. With both teams battling in the league standings, the three-game set presents a key opportunity to gain ground as the conference schedule enters its stretch run.
Cumberland enters the weekend at 18-24 overall and 5-7 in conference play, currently sitting fifth in the MSC standings, while Bethel comes in at 10-23 overall and 4-8 in league play, just one game back of the Phoenix. Despite the records, both teams have shown flashes offensively, setting up what could be a high-scoring series.
Cumberland's offense has been one of the most dangerous in the NAIA this season, particularly in terms of power production. The Phoenix rank 7th nationally in home runs (68) and 13th in slugging percentage (.545) while also sitting 14th in extra-base hits (159) and 13th in total bases (740). Cumberland's .320 team batting average ranks 29th nationally.
Wilser Then has been on a tear lately batting .416 with 12 home runs, 43 RBI, and a staggering .832 slugging percentage. Caleb Royer adds another power bat with 12 long balls and 30 RBI. Gaines Haussin has been the table setter from the lead off spot hitting .359 with seven home runs and 40 runs scored. Aiden McDonald is hitting .333 with 37 RBI.
Bethel, meanwhile, takes a different approach offensively. The Wildcats are hitting .286 as a team, but they do a strong job of putting the ball in play, ranking 22nd nationally with just 204 strikeouts. Bethel's offense is led by Juan Diego Ramos hitting .355 this season. Cade Pilkinton is hitting .336 with a team-high 10 doubles and Adriel Vega is hitting .311 with five home runs and 29 RBI.
Cumberland is expected to rely on a strong weekend rotation led by
Logan Baskin,
Carter Whitefield, and
Mateo Santos. Baskin has posted 61 punchouts in 56.1 innings with a 4.63 ERA, while Whitefield has been the most efficient arm with a team-best 3.11 ERA across 46.1 innings. Santos rounds out the rotation with a 5-2 record and a 4.99 ERA.
Bethel's pitching staff enters the weekend with an 8.73 ERA. The Wildcats are likely to turn to starters Alex Sterling, Zachary Zimmer, and Walker Ward, while Klayton Wright has been their most reliable arm out of the bullpen. Sterling holds a 3-5 record and leads Bethel in innings pitched but has battled with a 9.34 ERA across nine starts. Zimmer owns a 7.79 ERA across seven starts. Ward provides a left-handed option with a 6.95 ERA, combining solid strikeout numbers with a 204 record.
Opponents are hitting .320 against Bethel pitching, which could play into Cumberland's strength as one of the top offensive teams in the NAIA.
Cumberland has historically dominated the series, holding a 67-21 all-time record against Bethel, including a strong 28-11 mark on the road. The Phoenix have won eight of the last ten meetings and won the series last year in Lebanon. Cumberland's longest winning streak in the series spanned 44 games, highlighting decades of success in the matchup.
With just a one-game difference between the two teams in the conference standings, this series carries significant implications. A strong weekend for Cumberland could push the Phoenix closer to the .500 mark in league play and into contention for a higher seed in the MSC Tournament, while Bethel looks to snap a seven-game losing streak and climb out of the bottom tier of the standings. Both teams will be fighting to stay out of the play-in game in the Mid-South Conference Championship.
First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m. Weather may change around the Saturday game time as the forecast in McKenzie is showing rain. Game times will be updated on the website as they become available.
The Cumberland Sports Network will be on the road to have the call as Randy Sallis and Chris Slaughter will be there for all the action. Friday's games will air on WCOR AM 1490 and Saturday's game will be available on WANT FM 98.9. Bethel will provide a video feed on their website available for pay-per-view.
