Women’s Bowling Finishes Qualifying Strong, Fall In First Round

GREEN BAY, Wisc. --  Phoenix finished in the top half of the field in qualifying, but are headed into Friday in the consolation bracket.

For the first day of the Intercollegiate Team Championship, Cumberland will be bowling 24 qualifying games to decide the seeding heading into match play.

In the first four games, Cumberland scored 679 pins and sits in 12th, but they are 43 pins behind seventh place Mount Mercy. After eight games, the Phoenix moved to 10th place, scoring 751 pins in the second set of baker games, and reaching a score of 1430 through eight games. At the halfway point of qualifying, Cumberland scored 685 pins, for a total of 2115 pins and found themselves in 13th place.

After the halfway point, the Phoenix dropped to 15th place with a score of 726 in games 13-16, and a total score of 2841. Cumberland remained in 15th place with a score of 680 in the next set of four games for a total score of 3521 entering the final set of qualifying games. In the final four games of the qualifying session, the Phoenix got 842 pins, including a 241 in game 22 and a 253 in the final game of the session to jump up to seventh place with a score of 4363. Cumberland averaged 181.79 pins in the 24 baker games. The Phoenix averaged 176.25 in the first 12 games, and got 187.33 pins per game in the second 12 games.

With the seeding set, Cumberland faced off against the 10-seeded Newman in the first round of the blue bracket. Newman scored 4326 pins in the 24 qualifying baker games.

The difference between the third-seed Mount Mercy and the 15-seed Trine was just 14.5 pins per game.

In match play, it is a best-of-seven series throughout, instead of the mega match style that the Mid-South and NAIA Championships used.

In the first round matchup with the Jets, Cumberland took game one by a score of 212-185. In game two, it would come down to the last frame, but Newman took game two with a score of 180-173 and even the series at one apiece.

Moving on to game three, the Jets would take their second straight game by a score of 184-162 and take the series lead. In a pivotal game four, Cumberland would even the series back to two apiece with a score of 227-185.

With the series even at 2-2, it became a best of three series, and in that first game, Cumberland would take back the series lead with a score of 158-153. In game six, Newman would take it from the Phoenix in the final frame by a score of 175-172.

In game seven, the Jets would pull away and take the final game 192-140 and win the series four games to three.

As the Phoenix head into tomorrow, they will face off against 15-seed Trine in the first elimination game.
