Titans support girl’s flag football at Cumberland University

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Girl's flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The Cumberland Girl's Flag Football team is now going into their second year. They took a visit the Titans Training Camp practice on Friday to get a close look at the team.

In the program's first year, they've already made strides with stand out recruits including their quarterback, Madison Woodard.

"I've been around boys my whole life, so it was kind of similar when I got to high school and then my coaches made it fun to play," Woodard said. "We have to learn to face challenges, so I feel like you have to be open to trying new things."

She's a Nashville native and threw 61 touchdowns last year.

"I feel like we're getting a family bond cause we're more of a family first type of team," Woodard said.

Also a part of the growing team is Marley Hyde, who became Cumberland Flag Football's first All American.

"I didn't think it was an opportunity honestly, cause it was never around where I was," Hyde said.

And they're just scratching the surface.

"Even on campus people ask me all the time, they're like 'wow, flag, that's really cool'."

The Titans have been doing their part across the state. They even hosted their first girl's flag football youth camp this summer.

"They were a pivotal group getting it sanctioned a couple of years ago. I feel like we've developed a really good partnership and we've taken part in the leadership council that they had that brought in high school players from the area," Head Coach Steven Miller said.

With all of the recent support, the players hopes it continues to push the sport forward.

"The [Titans] give us exposure, for instance getting us here, people seeing our shirts and wondering who we are," Woodard said.
