Johnson, Kantner earn Mid-South Conference Football Player of the Week Honors

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cannon Johnson and Jack Kantner were both named Mid-South Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday. Johnson was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Kantner earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Johnson turned in an outstanding performance in Cumberland's 41-14 win over Florida Memorial, recording four total tackles, including two solo stops and two assisted tackles. His biggest contribution came through the air where Johnson also added a pass breakup and an interception in the second half, leading to a touchdown just four plays later.

The honor marks Johnson's first Defensive Player of the Week award this season, third of his career, and the third time a Phoenix has earned the award in 2026. Tyriq Edwards and Knox Watson previously earned the honor in back-to-back weeks.

Kantner also delivered a strong performance on special teams, going 5-for-6 on PAT attempts. On seven kickoffs, he recorded two touchbacks and totaled 419 yards, averaging 59.9 yards per kickoff.

This marks Kantner's first Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season and fourth of his career.

The Phoenix return to action Saturday for Homecoming, hosting No. 25 Georgetown at Nokes-Lasater Field. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.
