Mendoza's Game-Winners Garners First Career MSC Offensive Player of the Week Honor

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland men's soccer senior Wesley Mendoza was named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, conference officials announced Monday.

Mendoza scored three goals, including both game-winners, to lead the sixth-ranked Phoenix to a pair of victories.

The Nashville native opened the week with two goals on four shots in Cumberland's 3-2 win over Truett McConnell. With the match tied at 2-2, Mendoza scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute.

Mendoza delivered another clutch performance Saturday against defending NAIA national champion Grand View. He broke a 1-1 tie in the 64th minute, scoring on his only shot of the match to lift Cumberland to a 2-1 road victory.

On the season, Mendoza has scored four goals, second-most in the Mid-South Conference, trailing just teammate David Barbakadze. He is also fourth in the league in points with nine.

The senior forward finished the week with six points, placing four of his five shots on goal. He recorded a .600 shooting percentage and scored both of Cumberland's game-winning goals.

The Phoenix have a tough test today taking on No. 4 William Penn (Iowa) on the road.
