Big innings send Campbellsville past CU

LEBANON, Tenn. – Paola Del Valle collected three hits and three RBIs in two games and Tyra Graham added three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the second contest for Cumberland, but 16th-ranked Campbellsville University used big innings offensively in both games and scored twice in the sixth in the second outing for a doubleheader sweep, 15-6 and 8-7, against the Phoenix in softball action Saturday in Campbellsville, Ky.

The two teams finished their four-game series next Saturday with another doubleheader at Noon CT.

Campbellsville (14-3, 2-0) plated nine runs on seven hits and four walks to break open a 6-5 contest en route to the victory in game one. In the second contest the Tigers scored five runs in the fifth for a 6-5 edge, but the Phoenix (11-4, 0-2) pushed across two runs in the sixth on a solo homer by Graham and a run-scoring single from Brigid Antonelli.

Campbellsville retook the lead with a two-run single by Lexi Miller in the bottom of the frame for the doubleheader sweep.

Madison Woodruff posted two hits with two runs scored and two RBIs in the first game and Del Valle collected two hits with a double and one RBI. Kayley Caplinger (5-2) suffered the loss for CU, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits in three-plus innings.

Graham netted three of the team’s 10 hits in the second contest and Del Valle added one hit and two RBIs. Antonelli finished 2-for-2 with a walk and one RBI. Morgan Arndt (5-1) took the loss, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

The Tigers plated a run in the first in the opener when Aldridge singled down the leftfield line and moved to second on an error. Two batters later Miller doubled to center for a 1-0 lead for the home team.

Hannah Judd led off the second inning with a homer to right for Campbellsville and Tori Humphry followed with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryleigh Oldham. With two outs Payton Blades doubled to left, scoring Humphrey for a 3-0 edge.

Woodruff started the third inning with a single and Taylor Woodring followed with a double to right. Woodruff scored on a throwing error to get the Phoenix on the board, but the Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning.

Miller singled with one out and went to second on a groundout. With two outs Judd singled to left, scoring Miller, and took second on the throw. Humphry followed with a two-run homer to right, extending the Campbellsville lead to 6-1.

Cumberland got back in the game with four runs in the fourth, beginning with singles from Del Valle and Tawnee Hegre. Caitlyn Griffin’s groundout pushed the runners to second and third and Woodruff’s two-run single to right made it 6-3.

Graham was hit with two outs and Imani Torregano singled to left, loading the bases. Caplinger helped herself with a two-run single through the left side, cutting the deficit to 6-5.

The momentum didn’t last long, as Dana Adkins led off the bottom of the inning with a double and Blades singled before a three-run homer by Aldridge. Ryley Whitney walked, ending the day for Caplinger in the circle, and Miller singled. Riley Hurst hit a three-run homer to center and Judd followed with a two-run shot.

With two outs Brandi Garmon, Blades and Aldridge all walked and Whitney’s two-run single to right capped the nine-run inning for the Tigers.

Morgan Gailor (5-2) posted the win, giving up six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in four innings.

Cumberland started quickly in the second game when Graham reached on an error to leadoff the contest and Torregano walked. Caplinger moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and Graham scored on a wild pitch. Antonelli walked and Del Valle’s groundout plated Torregano for a 2-0 Phoenix lead after a half inning.

In the second inning Woodruff tripled with one out and scored on an infield single by Graham with two outs, extending the advantage to 3-0.

Cumberland got another run in the third after Caplinger walked to leadoff and went to second on Antonelli’s sac bunt. Del Valle singled up the middle, scoring pinch-runner Jasmine Krauss for a 4-0 CU lead.

Campbellsville got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Adkins singled and moved to second on a sac bunt from Blades. Aldridge walked and Whitney grounded to second, but the ball was booted, allowing the run to score.

The Phoenix got the run back in the fifth, starting with singles from Caplinger and Antonelli. Courtney Miles reached on an error, loading the bases, and Griffin’s single to left plated a run, but Woodruff bounced into an inning-ending doubleplay to end the threat without any more damage.

The Tigers rallied in the bottom of the frame, with everything starting with a two-out single by Whitney. Miller then doubled and Hurst scored both runners with a single up the middle. Judd followed with a single and Humphry belted her second homer of the day, a three-run shot, putting Campbellsville in front, 6-5.

Graham knotted the game at six with a one-out solo homer in the top of the sixth. Torregano singled to center and went to second on Caplinger’s groundout. Antonelli followed with an RBI single to right for a 7-6 CU edge.

Garmon reached on an error to leadoff the bottom of the inning and Blades singled before a walk to Aldridge loaded the bases. With one out Miller plated two runs with a single to right, putting Campbellsville in the lead for good.

Tigers starter Aleigha Talsma allowed seven runs on nine hits with three walks in 5.2 innings. Williams got the win in the second game as well, giving up one hit with one strikeout in 1.1 innings.

Cumberland hosts 22nd-ranked Freed-Hardeman in a doubleheader this Tuesday at 1 p.m. and travels to Hiwassee College on Wednesday for two games before finishing the series with Campbellsville.
