Men's volleyball sweeps Cincinnati Christian

LEBANON, Tenn. – Angel Acevedo Reyes posted seven kills and Arthur Amorim, Jordan Pierce and Mason Chambers added six apiece, as Cumberland hit .323 as a team in posting a 3-0 victory over Cincinnati Christian in men’s volleyball action here Monday night at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.

The Phoenix (3-15, 2-4 Mid-South) registered 36 kills and just 15 errors in 65 total attacks in the match, with Pierce and Brian Hogg combining for 32 assists. Braden Shelley led the Eagles (1-17, 1-8) with seven kills and Michael Hiroskey added six.

Two kills from Chambers and one by Stephan Davis gave Cumberland an 8-5 edge in the first set and Acevedo Reyes collected two kills for a 12-6 advantage. Acevedo Reyes and Amorim combined for a block and Amorim and Chambers netted spikes, extending the lead to 17-8.

Cincinnati Christian posted six of the next eight points, including kills by Shelley, Isac Kenney and Hiroskey, cutting the margin to 19-14. Hiroskey added a solo block and a service ace and the Eagles trailed by three, but Acevedo Reyes collected a kill and Amorim and Pierce recorded a block before a kill by Amorim and two errors by CCU ended the set, 25-19.

Amorim’s block and a kill from Davis put the Phoenix ahead, 5-1, in the second set but three kills by Shelley got the Eagles within 7-6. Lester and Hiroskey traded kills and a service ace by Lester preceded a kill by Tyler Sturzoiu for a 14-7 CU advantage.

Pierce, Sturzoiu and Amorim added spikes and Pierce got another before a ball handling error by Cincinnati Christian finished the set for the Phoenix, 25-14.

Cumberland relaxed and got a little sloppy in the third set, though Davis posted a kill and Chambers collected two before one by Pierce made it 5-3 CU. Acevedo Reyes netted three kills and Chambers added another, pushing the advantage to 15-11.

Jaret Knight recorded two service aces and made a tremendous diving stab for a dig late in the set for the Phoenix. Lester collected two kills for a 22-14 lead and Acevedo Reyes got another spike before two more from Amorim ended the match, 25-20.

Cumberland hosts Warner University on Friday at 6 p.m. and takes on Webber International at Noon and Brewton-Parker at 4 p.m. this weekend at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
