HENDERSON, Tenn.-- The Cumberland Softball team (7-17, 5-13 MSC) fall twice to #13 Freed-Hardeman (29-9, 17-7) in a doubleheader on Friday. Cumberland lost the first game 1-0 and the second game 5-1.
The first game of the doubleheader was a low-scoring affair between the Phoenix and the Lions. Cumberland started the game off with a runner in scoring position in Tyra Graham after she hit a leadoff single but was unable to convert that into runs. The Phoenix left Kenzie France in scoring position in the third inning after a single through the gap.
Freed Hardeman broke the seal in the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI triple from Allie Mitchell to ultimately win the game 1-0.
Cumberland's Mariah Clark gets credited with the loss in a game where she pitched excellent. Clark gave up four hits to Lion batters while striking four out and walking three.
Both teams had a clean sheet in terms of errors, with zero on the day. The Lions and the Phoenix each recorded four hits in the game. Tyra Graham, Taylor Woodring, Ashton Whiles, and Kenzie France recorded the hits for Cumberland in the first game.
The second game was a rough one for the Phoenix. The Lions opened the game with five unanswered runs to lead the game 5-0 at the end of the fourth. Bela Soto was the starter for Cumberland, and she gave up three runs in just over two innings pitched. Soto was relieved by Kaitlin Higgins in the top of the third. Higgins gave up the final two runs of the game. Both pitchers combined to give up ten hits with no strikeouts.
The Cumberland offense came alive late in the top of the sixth, where they rattled off two hits and scored their only run of the game. Tyra Graham scored the run after Madison Woodruff hit an RBI single into center-field.
The Phoenix once again had a four-hit output in the game compared to the ten hits the Lions had. Both teams did not have an error in either of the games. Recording hits for the Phoenix were Tyra Graham, Madison Woodruff, and Ashton Whiles with a two-hit outing.
Cumberland and Freed-Hardeman take the field tomorrow in another doubleheader with game start times at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
